Quartz wicking?

I've seen it around the internet, but never really learned too much about it. Is it really as dangerous as some people say? Also, where can I buy it?

If you try to wick with a rock, you are an idiot. Period.

hell, i remember when people had pet rocks and even tried to feed them.
anything is possible, now if it works or not is another question...

I was kind of looking into that as I was just curious about it.

Apparently, fused quartz rods will transfer liquid. Something to do with surface tension and stuff I just don't understand. The stuff isn't even that expensive, less than $3 for a 4' long piece of 2.5mm rod. But there is always a $50 minimum order. The hazardous part comes from cutting it and grinding it to fit your application exactly. That comes from the quartz dust itself and the possibility of getting it in your eyes or inhaling it so you should really do that outside using goggles and some kind of mask as well as gloves. But once you have done that, and washed it off well, there should be no danger in using the stuff. I would like to get a small piece myself to try in a AGA T-2 or an RSST with a pyrex tank.

Take the above advice. There is better wicking material.
