Proposed changes by City Administrator Dan Buchholtz were altered after the March 16 City Council meeting to clarify that electronic cigarette use is allowed in the city.

E-cigarettes are not prohibited under the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, though cities were given the authority to regulate e-cigarettes last year.

Until there is definitive proof that e-cigarette vapors are harmful, City Council Member Bob Nelson does not want the city to ban them, he said.

“You couldn’t eat eggs – now you can have 10 a day,” Nelson said, pointing to research bouncing one way then the other in several cases.

Nelson himself smokes e-cigarettes, and they have helped him reduce the amount of traditional cigarettes he smokes.

“I went from a pack a day to one pack a week,” he said. “It really helps with quitting smoking.”
Banning e-cigarettes should not be a city decision, Nelson said.

Council Member Ken Wendling agreed: If businesses did not want e-cigarettes smoked indoors, “I think the businesses would ban (them) on their own ….”
