Been thinking of dipping a toe into the more advanced coil arena. Figured to start with simple single-core Clapton. Rather than buy pre-made coils I thought maybe to create my own Clapton wire. Local vape shop recommended 36 ga. SS316L over 26 ga. SS316L. But then I thought "I don't know if it's really worth the effort, so maybe buy some pre-made Clapton wire and try that, first?"

Looking at the offerings from one of the vendors, I saw just that--until I looked more closely. Turns out what they're selling is 36 ga. Kanthal over 26 ga. SS316L.

So the question is: Can you run such a coil in TC mode? How do you set the TCR? To the SS316L? Something else higher/lower?

And why Kanthal over SS316L, rather than SS316L over SS316L?

I am not an expert at wire , but have done some single SS clapton wire. Found it worked out better buying spools premade from AVS.

I would think that you can NOT use TC on that combo wire. You'd need to find prewound Clapton wire that's all stainless.

The stainless Clapton wire I have is Lightning Vapes brand, which of course has changed to Wire Optim, or something like that, now.

Yea has to be full stainless coils to work in Tc.
Sometimes they add kanthal to the mix to keep the ohms a little higher but with wrap wire it doesn't really make a difference ohms wise. It's more about the core wires.

Like mixing kanthal like a framed staple coil. I use kanthal ribbon wire, ss frames for the ribbon and either ss or N80 for the wrap.

Not even sure if they make ss ribbon wire but that would make the coil ohm super low

I swear I think I have a spool of SS ribbon that I'll probably never use.

Wire Optim (FKA Lightning Vapes) is where I'm seeing the wire I described. They don't even list a single-core SS/SS wire. Everything that's SS/SS is all multi-core.

But I've finally found a power build that works on my Zeus RTAs, so I may drop the idea of TC, anyway.

    Thanks for the follow-ups, guys!

If you're not interested in TC and just want to use power mode my Killer coils would work great in your Zeus.

Mine is dual-core. That's true. I didn't realize you were looking for single-core. Glad you have something worked out, though. Great news!

The other coil type you might consider is just a SS 26ga round parallel coil. I use parallels a lot and really like them, flavor seems quite a bit better than just single-round-wire coils.

Thanks, @Don29palms , but the goal here is to reduce, eliminate, if possible, reliance on pre-built product by the time the Deeming Rules go into effect.

@nadalama, thanks. Maybe I'll give that a try someday.

I just thought to try an experiment. I have some Clapton coils I bought long ago and never used. Checked them. 2mm ID. "Hmmm... wonder if I can uncoil and re-coil them?" I thought. Uncoiled one on a 2mm mandrel. That was a success. Put the 3mm mandrel in my coiling tool. First discovery: Clapton won't fit under the little screw head on the coiler. Ok, by hand, then. But then, as I got near the end, I found I had a whole bunch of outer coil waving in the breeze. So much for that idea [IMG]

I do it alt he time. It is easier if you use a stepped mandrel and work the coil uptothe size you want. Of course it is limited by the lengthof the legs...

With some practice making claptons isn't that tough. If you want a super easy foolproof way to make claptons invest in an Avidartisan Daedalus. With that tool you can make any kind of clapton wire easily.
