Supergirl's second season was rarely at its best when focused on the J'onn/M'gann romance and the various Martian subplots, so I wasn't necessarily expecting much from M'gann's return this week. That's what made "Far From the Tree" such a pleasant surprise. This episode offered a very somber, emotionally charged storyline that explored two very dysfunctional parent/child relationships. It's exactly the sort of strong effort the new season needed, even if it did very little to establish a clear path forward for the series.

The big twist with this episode is that it focused less on the J'onn/M'gann relationship than J'onn's connection to the father he didn't know survived the Green Martian purge. Needless to say, this was a huge week for J'onn. This is a character defined by the loss of his family and civilization and his long journey to establish a new family for himself on Earth.
