A film detailing the origins of Batman's nemesis The Joker is in early stages of development, with The Hangover's Todd Phillips attached to write and direct.
Sources have told IGN that, as Deadline originally reported, a Joker origin film is in early development stages by Warner Bros. and DC, with Phillips on board to direct and co-write the script with Scott Silver, who wrote Eminem's 8 Mile. Scorsese is reportedly attached as a producer alongside Phillips, according to Deadline.
IGN can confirm that the movie is not attached to the current DC Extended Universe or Jared Leto's version of the character. Instead, it will be part of an unannounced imprint of DC films that will look to tell one-off, disconnected stories separate from the DCEU. (So, for example, even if this film is released, Jared Leto's Joker would still appear in any DCEU-related films.)
