TDLR: Post a lyric, verse, stanza, etc, of a song that means something to you.

I thought this could be fun. Kind of a spin off from the "What song are you listening to thread."

I think of music as poetry. Unfortunately, I'm naturally drawn to the darker side of poetry. I listen very hard to the lyrics, tone, word choices and try to determine how the artist meant it to be perceived. So regardless of what style of music you like, we can all relate to just black and white text, where as, we may have never given a particular song a chance in hell.

Do you have a favorite verse that...
reminds you of something?
describes how you feel right now?
GETS YOU HYPE BRO!?
makes you feel better?
makes you feel all mushy inside?
makes you want to shake your ass?

All are welcome.

This is from Don Henley's Garden of Allah, but it could easily be called "The Ballad of Modern-Day America", particularly with regard to BP, BT, and FDA...

Today, I made an appearance downtown;
I am an expert witness, because I say I am.
And I said, 'Gentleman, and I use that word loosely,
I will testify for you;
I'm a gun for hire, I'm a saint, I'm a liar.'
Because there are no facts, there is no truth
Just data to be manipulated;
I can get any result you like --
What's it worth to ya?
Because there is no wrong, there is no right,
And I sleep
very well
at night.
No shame, no solution
No remorse, no retribution...
Just people selling T-shirts;
Just opportunity to participate
in the pathetic little circus,
And winning...
winning
WINNING...

The music is also HAUNTING... but the lyrics really nail modern-day practice.

I read that a couple different ways. Like you mentioned, sounds like people, such as the FDA, getting paid off to do someones bidding.

It also made me think of the bad eggs in law enforcement. Using excessive force, planting evidence and the like.

This relates to yours. Other ways America is so great.

We take medication to be someone else
And we take off our clothes to pay for the bills
Where downloading content will buy you a sentence
And murder is free in the Hollywood hills

And I'm living one big nightmare, the ugly truth has a model face
Making saints out of useless pop stars
Where's the intelligence?

A-M-E-R-I-C-A
Home of the free, the sick and depraved
A-M-E-R-I-C-A
So why the fuck are you looking at me?

Oil prices are so high we can't feed ourselves
So we buy into fast food and occupy the will
We upload our status and beg for attention
While they're all eating cake up on Capitol Hill

Still living in one big nightmare
God save the human race
Handing convicts fame in HD
Glorified ignorance

YES!

My favorite song, lyrically, of all time. "Where Dragons Dwell" by Gojira
--------------------
A deep voice is rising
From the heart of the mountain
Vibrations of the stone
I can hear in my heart
The call of instinct
The flight of the powerful
I hunger for it
It just keeps me alive
I met the dragon
In a cave by the mountain
Now I bring the evidence
The beast is alive
This ageless army
Will strike in the morning
And then a star will rise
And shine in the sky
But I grow impatient
Cannot stand the wait
And I start to dig
Within me
This tunnel to I

In this region of me
A great dragon is lying
On the wealth of a mighty world
My own world inside

I saw
I saw monsters
And I
And I started to dig within
When I
When I turn my back on them
They devour me
In this region of me
A dragon is lying there
Awake
Monster
Monsters kings
Do not scorn them
But do not fear them
Muster
Muster thy army
Dragons are the myth alive
In the heart of men

Reminds me of Rammstein,

I used to think he was singing "wonder bra" and it still makes me giggle

My mind instantly went to Lord of the Rings at the second verse lol.
After that, I thought of Eragon. You ever read that series? I love it.
Theeeeen I could look into the deeper meaning, which is, Meg is filled with rage :giggle:

"I went home with a waitress, the way I always do."

Ever since being in the military I've loved women in uniforms of any kind. My first wife was a flight attendant when we met.

I also enjoyed picking up waitresses when I was younger. Now I just want them to get my order correct.

i'll start with,

"I'll try," she said as he walked away.
"Try not to lose you."
Two vibrant hearts could change.

I have "two vibrant hearts could change" tattooed on my arm. It reminds me to never get too comfortable or stop doing the little things.
Great song. Actually sang it while reading. Lol

The band is August Burns Red. The song is "Ghosts" . It's about veterans coming home and getting treated like scum. I'm not military but my dad was. I've seen this so many times in too many towns. It's a shame.

We are the ghosts of the midway, the beasts of the alley
We are the living dead, living in your nightmares
Scraping ourselves from the earth
Living as though we are dirt
Staring like you’ve seen a ghost
The lowest of the low, with nowhere to go

Back from the dead, now we’re groveling at your feet
Handcuffed for lying our heads as we’re withering in the streets
Back from the dead, now we’re groveling at your feet
Handcuffed for lying our heads as we’re withering in the streets

Fighting for your attention, begging for your generosity
Looking up just to see you turn your cheek on me
You walk on by like I’m invisible (invisible)
All I want is to be seen as an equal

We fought your battles, and we built your homes
Sorry if I disturbed you
I just wish we could live like you do

Even in our most beautiful days it’s dark
Just look at the world around you
There’s a consequence for what we do
Pass judgment on me as you walk
Picture-perfect ain’t my obsession
You can’t sum up my life from a first impression
Learn your lesson

Act like you know me, but do you even know yourself?
When you got nothin’, you got nothin’ to lose
Act like you know me, but do you even know yourself?
When you got nothin’, you got nothin’ to lose

I may have no-one else to blame, but listen to me
You and I, we were once the same
I may have no-one else to blame, but listen to me
You and I, we were once the same
I may have no-one else to blame, but listen to me
You and I, we were once the same
I may have no-one else to blame, but listen to me
You and I, we were once the same

The next selection is August Burns Red again. My fav even though it's Christian metal core band. Musically this is an amazing band. Anyhow the song is "Composure".. You just gotta get back up.

Shake it off
Pick yourself up, they say
Your life fell apart in your hands, and you've got the scars to prove it
It's not the first time, and they're getting deeper

Pull it together
Button up your shirt
Roll down those sleeves
Don't let them see how you've coped
It's not the first time, and they're getting deeper

More and more your demeanor looks like quicksand
More and more your demeanor looks like quicksand
It seems like your giving up, giving up on everything you worked for
It seems like your giving up, giving up on everything you worked for

It's pulling you under
It's gripping around your throat
It's pulling you under
It's gripping around your throat
It seems like your giving up on everything
It seems like your giving up on everything

It's pulling you under
(It's pulling you under)

Life can be overwhelming
But don't turn your back on the strongest crutch you've ever had
(You've ever had)
They have always been there to brace your fall
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
You've got your whole life to lead
You've got your whole life to lead
It's time to gain some ground

I tried to face the fight within
But it's over
I'm ready for the riot to begin and surrender
I walked the path, it led me to the end, remember
I'm caught beneath with nothing left to give, forever

When angels fall with broken wings
I can't give up, I can't give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I'll carry you and we will live forever, for ever

Grey skies will chase the light away, no longer
I fought the fight, now only dark remains forever
Divided I will stand
And I will let this end

When angels fall with broken wings
I can't give up, I can't give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I'll carry you and we will live forever, for ever

The sun begins to rise and wash away the sky
The turning of the tide, don't leave it all behind
And I will never say goodbye

When angels fall with broken wings
I can't give up, I can't give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I'll carry you and we will live forever, for ever
Forever, forever

Edit: I forgot the rest of the lyrics lol. All in there now

That line "I am an expert witness, because I say I am" -- that's fucking Stanton Glantz TO THE LIFE. He has ZERO credentials in anything health-related, he's a fucking mechanical engineer! Yet all the ANTZ salute him like he's their Fuerher. SEIG HEIL! Goddamn fascists.

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing,
ever waning,
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice
fate – monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy
fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
so at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me!

Down to that union hall
Gonna romp and tromp 'till midnite
We're gonna fuss and fight 'till daylight
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
Tell poodle I'll tell him here
Tell albert I'll see him near
Tell old pistol pete
Everybody gonna meet

Gonna kick down all the doors
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long

Before he died, I read the funniest quote from him, in Rolling Stone: "It was a matter of stop drinking, or stop driving. So I turned in my license." :giggle:

Andria

A man who knew how to set his priorities in order.

One afternoon I was passing through South Station in Boston (a train and subway terminal) and I knew that there were free shows at times. This particular day Warren Zevon was playing. The band put on a one hour show and played Lawyers, Guns and Money. I stood maybe 20 feet from the stage. That made my day.

Not musical, but my favorite poem in memory of my son:

I Carry Your Heart With Me
By e. e. cummings

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Our Lady Peace
I walked around my good intentions
And found that there were none
I blamed my father for the wasted years
We hardly talked
I never thought I would forget this hate
Then a phone call made me realize
I'm wrong
If I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
Just like the sunny days that
We ignore because
We're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to god I figure out
What's wrong
I walked around my room
Not thinking
Just sinking in this box
I blame myself for being too much
Like somebody else
I never thought I would just
Bend this way
Then a phone call made me realize
I'm wrong

I'm here
Where endless meets the end
Do you see me?
I'm hidden here again
Your whispers found its way
Calling me to stay

I'm standing at the edge
But something always brings me back
All the voices in my head
Reminding of what I have

If I fall tonight
You can bring me back to life
If I fall tonight
You can be my saving light

A bullet is a man
From time to time he strays
I compare my life to this
To this I relate
And I'm willing
To listen to your answers
And I'm not afraid
To tell you I need you today

Will the darkness fall upon me
When the air is growing thin
Will the light begin to pull me
To its everlasting will
I can hear the voices haunting
There is nothing left to fear
And I am still calling
I am still calling to you

Oh yeah now THIS IS POETRY

Amon Amarth ''Where Silent Guards Stand Guard"

The last head falls to the ground
No one is left alive
They thought that they could take me down
But it's not my time to die
I wipe the blood from my sword
And slide it in my belt
This is the sweetest of rewards
The best rush I have felt
Ten men are dead by my feet
I smell their steaming blood
And I smile, cause it makes me
Makes me feel so good
They were crawling on their knees
Begging for their pathetic lives
Now their souls belong to me
As well as their eyes
Each man has something that I crave
I ate their steaming eyes
And drink their blood to make them my slaves
At Odin's feet in afterlife
I bring the skulls to my shrine
Where silent gods stand guard
Soak them in blood and in wine
A sacrificial ritual
One thousand heads are on display
Collected through years of thirst
Macabre trophies from my prey
Picked clean of flesh by Odin's birds
I am a wolf in human shape
I am a predator with flaming rage
I'm a wolf in human shape
Every man is prey
A predator with flaming rage
Blood is in my trace
I will die with sword in hand
And then my seat's secured
When Odin calls from golden hall
He will greet me at the door

It's a pretty song, very empowering to imagine being a Viking lol

One of these days, boy
Gonna see my baby
Gonna see my baby
Coming down the road
She'll have my pardon
Pardon in her apron, oh, Lord
Gonna see the governor
who said release my man

She's coming down the road, boy
She's coming down the road
Red dress on, yeah
She's got her red dress on
She's coming down the road, boy
She's coming down the road
Her bags down low
She's got her bags down low

One of these days, boy
Gonna see my woman
She'll have my children
Children on her knee
I'll run up to my woman
And hold her in my arms
Tears in her eyes
She says I'm glad you're free

Change will come
Change is here
Love fades out
Then love appears

Now my water's turned to wine
And these thoughts I have
I now can claim as mine
I'm coming home

Change has been
Change will be
Time will tell
Then time will ease

Now my curtain has been drawn
And my heart can go
Where my heart does belong
I'm going home

~~ Collective Soul

One of those songs I'd heard many times, just never noticed, so much, while listening to the CD, until I was driving home from my mother's funeral. It came across clearly for the first time. Though I was bawling my eyes out, I had to hear those words again.

Thanksgiving's coming on the Fourth of July
In the form of a girl with a needle in her eye
She came from out west on a nickel's worth of gas
Got her mind on her money and d*pe up her ass
Outside of Phoenix when the hemi broke down
The cracker boys rigged it she was out of that town

Name that tune- it's been stuck in my head all week

She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder
And the rain
To quietly pass me by

"I (Who Have Nothing)"

I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Adore you, and want you so
I'm just a no one,
With nothing to give you but Oh
I Love You

He, He buys you diamonds
Bright, sparkling diamonds
But believe me, dear when I say,
That he can give you the world,
But he'll never love you the way
I Love You

He can take you anyplace he wants
To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against the window pane
I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Must watch you, go dancing by
Wrapped in the arms of somebody else
When darling it's I
Who Loves you

I Love You
I Love You
I Love You

When you can't run fast
I'll walk with you
When you can't stand up
I'll carry you, too
Even in the darkest hour
You'll never be alone
Even when you're far, far, far
From home

If we could take the time
To lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
Then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
In the cold November rain

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will 'cause
I sure could use a vacation from this

Stupid shit, Silly shit, stupid shit..

One great big festering neon distraction
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

Learn to swim.

Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Learn to swim.

Fuck L Ron Hubbard and
Fuck all his clones.
Fuck all these gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes.

Learn to swim.

Fuck retro anything.
Fuck your tattoos.
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory.

Learn to swim.

Fuck smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas.
Fuck these dysfunctional
Insecure actresses.

Learn to swim.
'Cause I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna see it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.
Time to bring it down again.
Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.
I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend.
I wanna see it all come down.
Put it down.
Suck it down.
Flush it down.

TOOL- Aenema. This to me is one of the most beautiful and hateful songs ever written about a city and its inhabitants.

I'm so god damn tired of whistling,
I'm so lonesome I could cry,
and your eyes they look like diamonds,
Still stuck inside the mind,
and I'll dig 'em out.
And I know that you're waiting around to find the right man,
But the thing about taking your time,
It takes it right back,
No one deserves my world, quite like you do.
And its true, I hate everything but you.

So tonight,
I'll follow you home.
Start up a fire that'll keep us both warm,
And I'll drag my lips up your thighs,
Wait 'til you open your eyes.
When I'll hold you real still.
And if I can't have you,

Winter was leaving early,
That chill to the bone.
And I kissed you every morning,
as the wind whistled on.
But God's humor did too.
But when you're as happy as this,
Time starts to fly,
But I built these wings after jumping,
Not dreaming of the sky for you.
And it's all for you.
My skin is gray too.
And I'll lay by your side,
'Til everything is rottin' through.

So tonight, we'll celebrate life.
Eat the best food and we'll drink the best wine,
And we'll make love too.
Dreaming every moment of you.
Your chest against mine.
My gun against your spine.
And we'll leave the world the way,

And it's all for you.
It's all for you.
These things that I do.
They're all for you.
My skin is gray too.
'Cause it's all for you.
And I'll lay by your side,
'Til everything is rottin' through.

Amigo the Devil- The Dreamer. This is the most evil song ever and performed so beautifully. Read the lyrics carefully.

There's a gateway in our mind that leads somewhere out there far beyond this plane
Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain
Tell me how you make illegal something that we all make in our brain
Some say you might go crazy but then again it might make you go sane

Every time I take a look inside that old and fabled book
I'm blinded and reminded of the pain caused by some old man in the sky
M*rijuana, L*D, p****cybin, and D*T they all changed the way I see
But love's the only thing that ever saved my life

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will 'cause
I sure could use a vacation from this

I assumed you liked Tool because of your profile image, that artist and Tool are linked in my mind

"Lateralus"

I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected
Enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired, to fathom the power,
To witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
To swing on the spiral, to swing on the spiral,

To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.

I'm reaching up and reaching out.
I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me.
Whatever will bewilder me.

And following our will and wind
We may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end
And may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going.

The rhythm of the words in this song are based on the Fibonacci sequence (1+1+2+3+5+8+13) then it goes backwards, "swinging on the spiral" so amazing.

"a series of numbers in which each number ( Fibonacci number ) is the sum of the two preceding numbers. The simplest is the series 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc"
