If you are new to vaping.. try smaller puffs/drags.
Expect to cough and cough up yucks.. it's your body's way of getting rid of toxins and repairing itself.

Also make sure your juice is right for your tank/rda you are using.

The nicotine content might be too high. I smoked about a pack a day and switched to vaping back in July 2018. With a sub-ohm tank (0.15 ohms and 70 watts), I'm only using 3mg/ml nicotine (70/30 VG/PG).

A lot of folks do seem to get that coughing reaction when they first start vaping. It looks like that tank is one of those sub-ohm dealies, which produce a pretty hot bunch of thick clouds, and that's definitely not the kind of vape a newbie needs -- hell, I've been vaping for nearly 5 yrs, and that kind of vape would choke the shit outta me!

You really need a tank that isn't sub-ohm, and which has a narrower driptip (the part you put in your mouth), so that you can use a controlled amount of suction, the same kind of suction you use with a cigarette or a straw; you get more flavor that way, and it's much easier to control the vapor you inhale, since it goes first into your mouth, rather than huffing it straight into your lungs like it's model glue or something. I hear that a lot of new folks have good luck with Nautilus tanks, for just those reasons.

    Welcome to VU!

    Using Ello tank?
I think most start with a mouth to lung device, but direct to lung like Ello is ok if you can get used to it.
What resistance coil are you using? 0.3Ω ? That might be as high as it gets for Ello, I don't know. I know other coils from other brands are compatible with that tank tho. If you can find something like .4 or .5 or higher if would require less power and make adjusting your vape while your getting used to it, a little easier.

Looks like the juice is 50/50 PG/VG, try some that is 70/30 for a little less PG since it creates throat hit. I started with 12mg nic sub ohming, so you might be ok with 10.

Other than changing to a MTL device, just keep the power low and don't take big hits that make you cough. You might wind up smoking some in between till you get more used to vapor vs smoke. Just keep at it. Always go for the vape first. While getting used to it don't go for cloud, just feel. Slow and easy wins this race.

You might later decide that "direct to lung" is something you actually want; a lot do. But at first, smokers' lungs are pretty damaged, and it's a whole new thing, not smoke at all -- which contains topical anesthetics and bronchodilators, just so that people CAN carry on smoking for years! -- vapor doesn't have any of that, so your lungs are giving the usual reaction to something inhaled which seems strange: coughing to get rid of it. Vaping at a lower power/temp is a good way to lessen the cloud production (hence not using a sub-ohm coil, which is pretty hot), and vaping mouth-to-lung does give you more control -- and more flavor, which is also an issue for smokers, since smoke deadens the tastebuds considerably -- over the first year or two after quitting smoking, you'll start tasting and smelling a lot more intensely.

Coughing *IS* part of recovering from smoking, you do have to get that crud outta there, but it does need to be in a more controlled fashion. :D

Good luck! You can do it!

Welcome @Gatthf and I hope you enjoy your stay~!

1st Congratulations on making the decision to quit and I will help you any way I can for you to become a former smoker~!

From my personal experience when first quitting and attempting to quit smoking, vaping irritates your throat due to the lack of those lovely chemicals added to cigarettes that numbs your throat or desensitizes it. 2 weeks of not smoking is all it took before I was blowing clouds bigger than any drag off a killer stick I ever took. Good Luck and feel free to ask any questions you have. The only stupid question is the one not asked.

I am have something of the opposite effect. for about the last 6+ months I have had a cough, mostly a throat clearing thing, flem.
within just 1 day of vaping(and I had a smoke here & there) the cough has diminished quit a bit. 1 week now 90%+ gone.
and my lungs don't feel heavy like they did before.
