Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John F. Nash, Jr., 86, and his wife Alicia, 82, -- who were portrayed by Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, respectively, in the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind -- died in a car crash in New Jersey on Saturday.
According to the New York Times, the Nashes "were in a taxi on the New Jersey Turnpike in Monroe Township around 4:30 p.m. when the driver lost control while trying to pass another car and hit a guard rail and another vehicle." They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sadly, John Forbes Nash, Jr. is perhaps as much known to the general public for his descent into mental illness -- as documented in the aforementioned 2001 film and its source, Sylvia Nasar's 1998 biography of the same name -- as he was for his expertise in the fields of game theory, differential geometry, and partial differential equations.
