It’s been five long years since we first hopped aboard Edward Kenway’s Jackdaw in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, and aside from the arctic reskin we saw in Assassin’s Creed Rogue, seafaring hasn’t made many appearances in the franchise since. While the few tastes of naval combat we got in Origins definitely whet our appetites for war on the open ocean, Ubisoft Quebec is serving up a fully-overhauled version of the beloved combat and travel system in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.







“We felt like it was a good time to bring back something that fans were really happy with in past Assassin’s Creeds,” says Game Director on Odyssey Scott Phillips. “Origins touched on it a little bit, and then we sort of redesigned it - had to build all new tech in order to support the seamless open-world nature,” he continues, explaining that they couldn’t merely just expand on the short ship sections of Origins built on the AnvilNext 2.0 engine that’s been in use since Assassin’s Creed Unity.
