European aerospace company Airbus is working on the Advanced Expendable Launcher with Innovative engine Economy (Adeline), a reusable first-stage rocket concept that can land on a runway.
The Adeline’s wings and propellers let it land like an airplane on a runway after following a ballistic trajectory, according to Ars Technica.
Present-day space launch systems use expendable rocket engines and fuel tanks that make splashdown into the ocean after each launch, making it a costly exercise at around US$250-500 million for each launch.
