Barely a year after Dan Slott relaunched Amazing Spider-Man with Peter Parker back in the costume, the series is wrapping up again to make way for Secret Wars and its various Spider-themed tie-ins. So much for a little post-Spider-Verse stability in Peter's world. Sadly, Amazing Spider-Man #18 is an unsatisfying finale that fails to wrap up loose ends or efficiently juggle its two story threads.

The decision to divide this arc into distinct segments (one focused on intrigue at Parker Industries and the other on Black Cat's dirty dealings) has been a major hindrance. As with issue #16, the Parker Industries storyline feels rushed and compressed, while the Black Cat feature simply isn't compelling enough to justify the attention it receives. Black Cat's transformation into full-fledged villain has always been a weak point of this series. It doesn't feel genuine or like a logical extension of her role in Superior Spider-Man.
