Marvel's tiny superhero outpaced Universal's Minions and Trainwreck at this weekend's box office.
Despite being number one, however, Ant-Man's $58 million debut pales in comparison to the vast majority of films set within the Marvel Comics universe. For the sake of comparison, Avengers: Age of Ultron more than tripled that earlier this year, earning a whopping $191 million in its first weekend.
Not only that, but Ant-Man marks the company's lowest domestic debut since The Incredible Hulk, falling a few million shy of Captain America: The First Avenger's modest $65 million opening. While Ant-Man is hardly the most recognizable character among comic book superheroes, this is probably not the opening Marvel was hoping for, especially in light of such positive critical reception.
