Aquarius' second hour/episode of the night, "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game," took Sam away from his quest for Emma and set him out on an actual case. Which was a wise move considering that we needed to learn more about both Sam and Brian as characters. It also helped shaped, more or less, what the series will settle into. The larger Manson arc peppered with street crime cases that work, for better or worse, to highlight/spotlight social struggles of the era.
So Sam and Brian headed down to Watts, Sam's old rookie beat, where Brian witnessed Sam engaging in a bit of "old school" chicanery in order to get a white husband (in a black neighborhood) to admit to killing his own wife. The ruse involved "arresting" a Nation of Islam member named Bunchy (Gaius Charles) in order to trick a confession out of the actual killer - an act Sam saw as harmless but Brian took offense to.
