Bates Motel has more or less figured out how its little compact 10-episodes seasons run. Norman's mental condition worsens while Dylan and Norma both get dangerously involved with the local crime scene - sometimes even with the same bad guy from opposite ends of the spectrum. And in the end Sheriff Romero kills said bad guy. Clearing the slate somewhat for the next season. Only Norman's messed-up mind remains as the thing that truly lingers and bridges.
And to that end, the show works. Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga are exceptionally strong leads and this season saw Norman's blackouts and delusions overcome him to the point where he essentially lost his role as the central character on the show. He was no longer a reliable anchor at all and, by the end, there was very rarely a moment where he was lucid.
