New book releases are plentiful in February, especially for anyone interested in sci-fi and fantasy. We’ve got a new book in the Star Wars: High Republic line, a “hefty novella” by Brandon Sanderson, and a twisty sci-fi tale being optioned for a film by Parasite’s Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson. You could fill up all your free time and then some this month reading these new releases. Take a look at what’s ahead and pick up whatever ones you want.
In addition to having penned a number of previous books and series on his own, Daniel Abraham co-authored the enormously popular Expanse series. His latest book, Age of Ash, kicks off a new trilogy set in the ancient city of Kithamar. Alys is a petty thief whose life begins to spiral when her brother is killed. She sets off on a mission to find the killer, but along the way discovers more than she bargained for.
If you like a story that mixes horror with sci-fi, this one’s for you. A distress signal in outer space lures Claire Kovalik and her crew to what remains of a luxurious space liner that went missing two decades earlier. As they explore the ship, they find that the horrors that put an end to its maiden voyage haven’t quite ended.
The prolific fantasy novelist Brandon Sanderson does not stop writing. Ever. His latest is Dawnshard, a novella set in the Stormlight Archive universe that focuses on Rysn Ftori, whose pet larkin is sick. The only cure is on island of Akinah. Unfortunately, a deadly storm has parked itself over the island, making a journey there perilous.
Every time Mickey7 dies, his body is regenerated in a new version that retains most of his memories. This makes him a valuable employee on a colonizing mission to a dangerous ice world. But after he goes missing and is presumed dead, he returns to base to find Mickey8, a new version of himself, waiting. The rest of the crew wouldn’t accept two Mickeys, so now he has to keep his clone a secret, all while the mission is becoming increasingly hostile.
Parasite director Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson are already in talks to turn this novel into a movie.
Midnight Horizon is the third book in the High Republic sub-series for YA readers (ages 12 - 18), following Into the Dark and Out of the Shadows. It’s set several hundred years before The Phantom Menace, during a time when Jedi were plentiful and helped keep peace throughout the galaxy. This book catches up with Padawans Reath and Ram as they go undercover to stop an attack on one of the more posh planets in the Galactic Core.
This latest book from Marlon James is a sequel to 2019’s Black Leopard, Red Wolf, which introduced a fantasy world infused with African history and mythology. That book followed a hunter named Tracker on a quest to find a missing boy. This sequel zeroes in on the Moon Witch, who has her own side of the story regarding the boy’s disappearance.
Bluebird is a space-faring adventure about a lesbian gunfighter named Rig who goes on a mission to save her sister. But that’s no easy task, as she gets caught up in a battle for control of the galaxy.
Looking for something a little sexier? The Book of the Most Precious Substance follows rare book dealer Lily Albrecht as she embarks on a globetrotting quest to find the titular tome. The book in question? An ancient manual of sex magic, a book sought after by some of the wealthiest people in the world. Does the book really exist? Will Lily find it? What will she do with it if she does? This fantastical erotic thriller has been getting lots of buzz.
