Disney Plus' upcoming The Book of Boba Fett was such a secret before its reveal on The Mandalorian that even major cast members and certain high-level leaders at the company didn't know about the series' existence beforehand.

In a new interview with THR, Boba Fett co-showrunner Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids, Alita: Battle Angel) revealed that the secrecy around the existence of the new show stunned many in the media giant, including a key actor.

“Even Disney didn’t know we were going to drop it like that,” marvels The Book of Boba Fett co-showrunner Robert Rodriguez. “I got to see the inner workings, and [Favreau and writer-producer-director Dave Filoni] kept this a secret from everybody.”

Actor Ming-Na Wen, who plays Fett's right-hand Fennec Shand, originally believed she was signing on to do another season of The Mandalorian after her character was resurrected in season 2. It wasn't until she showed up on set that she realized the context was significantly different, thanks to Disney's practice of obscuring the name of major projects.

Major executives and all necessary business and legal affairs workers at Disney still knew what was coming down the pipeline, but it speaks to how much control Disney is giving to Favreau and Filoni over this gritty slice of the Star Wars universe.

Favreau and Filoni helped usher in The Mandalorian whose first season helped launch Disney Plus to success in 2019, and successfully increased interest in the Star Wars universe following a critically divisive conclusion to the Skywalker trilogy.

As for the major tentpole films, fans had long since learned that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weis and David Benioff, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson were all working on new Star Wars films until they departed, reportedly due to creative differences with Disney.

The Book of Boba Fett follows the titular bounty hunter icon and his partner, Fennec Shand, as they claim Jabba the Hutt's former Tatooine palace and work to build an underworld empire. Disney is similarly launching several other Star Wars series on its streaming service in the future, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, and more.

The Book of Boba Fett releases on Disney Plus on December 29. In the meantime, you can also check out Disney's new documentary focused on the creation of the Boba Fett character and his history throughout the Star Wars universe.
