Brand new to DIY, question about mixing by Volume

Hello everyone! I am new to this group and brand new to DIY. Brand new as in I just mixed my very first test batch. I realize now that I should have bought a scale to mix by weight, which I will be doing tomorrow, but for this first batch I mixed by volume. Here is my question I hope you can help. I am using FA flavors for this recipe and using ejuice me up calc. I only did a 10mil test batch so the quantities were very small. I ended up using drops for my flavorings instead of mls because of this. The drops from the FA bottle are very tiny, smaller than say drops from a eye dropper or even a 1ml syringe, so can I trust that when it calls for 2 drops of a flavor for my 2% that the drops from the tiny FA bottle are enough? This "drops" thing is so inaccurate, I've gotta get a scale lol. Thanks for any help, or thoughts.

Nope, those drops won't give you 2 drops=2% in 10mls. I don't use drops that often anymore, but when I do I use bottles that I know give me 33 drops/ml, which means in 6mls 1 drop =0.5%. If you're getting your FA flavors from Mamajs, there bottles are 33 drops/ml, but all bottles are not created equal. Best advice is to fill up a syringe either to the 0.5ml (and double it) or the full 1ml and do the math from there!

Also be sure to set your drops/ml setting accurately in your calculator if you are going to use drops ... if I'm not mistaken, the eJuice Me Up calc defaults to 20 drops per ml.

Thanks so much for quick responses. I bought the FA flavors from BullCity. They should be in original FA bottles. When I tried do the drops into a 1ml syringe I came up with 33 drops for .5mls. Wow 66 drops per ml seems like a lot, maybe I made a mistake but its what I came up with. The calc was indeed set to 20drops per ml, thanks for that info didn't notice that option. Hmm not sure weather to add drops based on the 66 drops per ml I came up with or not. Guess I will wait to see how strong or week it tastes after steeping and go from there. Like I said first batch so I'm not expecting much lol. Also I am trying the crockpot steep method, not sure if that's a good idea or not, and from the research I have done on this site and else where it seemed as though people were leaving the caps on while in the crock, should they be on or off? Seems like a good deal of pressure might build up with cap on so I was just curious. Thanks again for the responses and good info.

I don't steep very often - most FA recipes are good right away or the next day. If I do use a crockpot for custards, tobaccos, etc, then I use glass, lid ON (definitely), and low temp about 150 degrees with the lid cracked.

Go ahead and use the 66 drops until you get a scale. You can always dilute if it's too strong, and at least your small mixes should be fairly consistent (although that does seem a high number).

I'm in love with you already. Thanks for the quick response and good info. I am using glass and lid on. The crock lid is cracked a bit and temp is hanging around 140f. It's been in the crock for an hour so I am going to let it cool, shake and vape, see where the flavoring is from there. At that point I may go ahead and add the extra drops if I feel the need. First batch and I can't wait to get a scale lol. Thanks so much again, both of you give me a good first impression of this community.

Glad it's working for you! Be aware that some mixes do change the next day, even after being in the crockpot (they smooth out and blend).

Welcome BangPow! am new to this as well.. started with syringes for measuring which works well for me... altho for test batches i'm finding that it's sometimes hard to do tiny amounts as accurately as I would like. Agree with you tho re the scale thing.. decided right away to get one as well... just came in today so I am setting up to do a mix now. Good luck with your DIY!

Good luck to you as well. Just got done ordering my scale should be here next week. My first batch was essentially tasteless, expect for vg, pg, nic I guess, but with new info I added some flavor to it and while its not amazing it is very vapable. First batch so I didn't expect it to be great but the experience of doing it was great. Feel like I learned a good bit through the first process so I'll just take that knowledge and info and build on it. I am hoping to learn a great deal more here at vapingunderground from fellow diy'ers with loads of experience and continue to progress in this. Again thanks so much to all that responded and good luck to you Foggz. I will continue to pour through these forums as I have over the last five days and am welcome to any and all advice you pro diy'ers would like to pass along my way. Night all. vape well.
