The Conjuring franchise has always been a model of consistency, with each movie putting up solid box office performances from miniscule budgets. The five movies in the franchise thus far have put up $1.3 billion worldwide, while all five movies have cost $103.5 million, making it one of the most profitable movie franchises out there, but this weekend’s The Nun, a spin-off based on a character who first surfaced in 2016’s The Conjuring 2, has put up the best debut in franchise history with $53.5 million. Thus, it’s the perfect time to take a deeper dive through this entire horror franchise, which The Nun is about to take to new heights.

In just five years, The Conjuring franchise has seemingly taken a page out micro-budget producer Jason Blum’s handbook, delivering high-quality thrills without breaking the bank. Inspired by the true story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and the terrifying happenings at the Perron family home in the 1970s, The Conjuring surprised box office pundits with a $41.9 million debut in the summer of 2013, the third highest R-rated debut in history, at the time, en route to $137.4 million domestic and $319.5 million worldwide, from just a $20 million budget, laying the foundation for this impressive franchise.
