Star Trek: The Last Starship is easily one of the most exciting new Trek projects in any medium, in part because it's the comic that has seen Captain James T. Kirk resurrected in the Burn era. The series is about to kick off its second major storyline, one that sees Kirk become a Borg and The Last Starship embrace its horror side.
IGN can exclusively debut new artwork from Star Trek: The Last Starship #8. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below:
The Last Starship #8 is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and welcomes new artist Hernan Gonzalez. Here's the official description for the new story arc:
The crew of the U.S.S. Omega are desperately trying to hold the Federation’s vision of a united Galaxy together, but they’re failing. The spirit of cooperation is dead, but Starfleet’s mission might not be, thanks to a research station on the aptly named Deep Space Hope. There, one last shining ray of possibility remains in an ever-darkening universe. A way to put everything back in its rightful place…if only Sato and his crew are bold enough to seize it.
“It is time for The Last Starship to go where it has never gone before: cosmic horror," Kelly tells IGN. "The Omega was only one of two missions that were launched Post-Burn; the other was Deep Space Hope, a research station meant to discover the cataclysm's smoking gun. Now, DSH has finally reached out… with a message that could be as deadly to the stars as the Burn itself. With the incredible work of guest artist Hernan Gonzalez bringing this nightmare to life, what the crew will encounter will twist their minds, ignite their fears and spill their guts in ways that Star Trek comics have never seen. But for Jim Kirk, there will be only one chance at survival: stop being the man he was... and become the King he was meant to be.”
“The Last Starship was designed to tell stories about hopelessness, about the darkest parts of our souls, and about the limits of the Federation’s utopic vision," Lanzing says. "Deep Space Hope embodies that horror more directly than ever before. This is a story of cosmic horror not because it’s got tentacle monsters, but because it forces our characters to look into the darkness and see themselves trapped there. Hernan Gonzalez is an incredible find as an artist. The closest comparison I can make is to Gou Tanabe’s work on his Lovecraft adaptations, and for an artist this young that’s obviously very high praise. We’re insanely excited for people to see what’s coming on this arc not only because it’s going to really push Star Trek storytelling forward but because it’s just the scariest damn thing we’ve ever written.”
"Is Kirk is about to enter his Locutus era? Maybe. Is that the least terrifying thing that could possibly be in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Omega? Most definitely. It's time to enter Deep Space Hope -- where a group of scientists turned cultists make the crisis of the Burn feel like problems of the past," Senior Group Editor Heather Antos adds. "We're so thrilled to introduce the extremely talented Hernan Gonzalez to The Last Starship team. His horror sci-fi work has left us breathless, and we know it will for the readers as well. Our plan from the beginning of The Last Starship was to go boldly, and this arc may be our boldest move yet..."
This new storyline begins in Star Trek: The Last Starship #7, which will be released on May 20, 2026. You can preorder a copy at your local comic shop.
