John Layman and Rob Guillory make a perfect pair on Chew. Every issue is a beautiful synthesis of writing and art. There are some issues, however, where one of the creators just takes over. In the past Layman has flexed his dramatic and structural muscles (see the tragic #30 for instance), but this issue belongs entirely to the wild art stylings of Guillory.

The second-to-last chapter of the Blood Puddin’ arc is very much a “moving the chess pieces” installment. War is being waged, but before the inevitable food fight between Tony and The Collector can happen, Tony must reunite with his friends and family. Some of the character interactions that take place in this issue feel like a retread from the past issues of the storyline, but it’s always satisfying seeing such a great cast coming together.
