Syfy's latest miniseries Childhood's End will probably feel familiar to fans of the alien invasion subgenre. As part of a three-night event, the premiere episode is a slow burn and heavily relies on sci-fi conventions to inch the story forward. Luckily, there's a good underlying mystery to keep things interesting for the first hour and change, along with a shocking end-of-the-episode hook to (hopefully) draw you in for more.
Based on Arthur C. Clarke's 1953 novel of the same name, Childhood's End features a lot of the same trappings as series like V, The Event and Falling Skies. (Ironically, those shows were probably inspired by Clarke's original story.) The miniseries begins in 2016, as a mysterious but peaceful alien race dubbed "the Overlords" invades Earth, promising to make it a better place for everyone. However, this utopia comes at a cost: humanity's innovation and culture.
