Choder's review of the Vaporesso Orca Solo Pen Kit

This kit was sent to me by Vaporesso as part of the Power User Program, an introductory product release user-feedback invitation. Any feedback provided will be used for future Vaporesso R&D.

My first impressions of the unit was that it was compact and light weight. I ended up with a blue unit, which the site identifies as purple. The color of the unit is also identified on the front of the packaging as shown from the bar color at the bottom.

The entire line up of colors available are Black, Silver, Rainbow, Purple (Blue), Rose Gold (Pink), Metallic Grey (Gun Metal), and Mint Green.

In my box the following were included:
  • The Orca Solo Pen Unit
  • 2 coils (each at 1.3 Ω - one is a ceramic CCELL, other is cotton)
  • Braided 1.5-ft micro USB cord
  • Warranty paper
  • 3 sets of User’s manuals in various language’s (Chinese, Spanish/Russian, and English/French).

NOTE: Since I received a sample set, there were no spare parts included, but Vaporesso has confirmed that the retail version should contain some extra parts.

As mentioned this unit is small, compared to the Vaporesso Revenger X with an Asmodus Zesthia RTA tank, I was able to compare it to my daily carry. The Orca is just under 5 inches long and has a diameter of less than ¾ of an inch. The weight difference was also very much lighter in fact sometimes I don’t even remember it being in my pocket.

The components of the unit inclueds the drip tip, top sleeve, glass tube, OC coil and the bottom battery base. The coil is first threaded into the battery base then the glass tube is slipped into a 0.5 cm stub from the battery base. Finally, the metal caged sleeve with drip tip is thread onto the other end of the OC coil. At first, this seemed to be a simple setup but two issues came up.

The diameter of the underside of the chimney sleeve restricts most of the air flow so a different wider drip tip wouldn’t do much. This seems like it’s almost the same area as the AFC on the side of the device.

The kit comes with two different OC coils. One is a ceramic CCELL and the other cotton based. They are both great coils either way you go. Love that there is a knurling atop the coils for grip.

Five quick clicks on the button turns on the device. Each press of the button produces a soft “click” sound and lights up. The button glows green, blue and red indicating the level of the battery, respectively, as you use it. It still works when red but it’s a sign that the battery needs to be recharged soon. Unit charges fully in about 45 minutes, resulting in a green glow.

You can continue to use the unit while it’s charging but I don’t think it’s recommended. The unit does get a little warm during charging.

Branding is pretty minimal on the unit. There’s a subtle Vaporesso and Orca Solo logo lightly etched on the bottom end of the battery unit. I think it’s pretty classy.

Drop Incident
During work, I had forgot that I had the Orca unit in my shirt pocket because it’s so light in weight and as I bent over to pick something up the unit fell out and hit the concrete ground! At first I thought it was broken but luckily it wasn’t. The unit was still working fine but I did notice that the top tank portion was permanently tweaked. At the top of the battery

Taking the glass tank apart you can see that the inner battery sleeve has been unevenly pushed in. There wasn’t much that could be done to fix this. It’s an affordable rechargeable refillable unit so it would be worth to just getting a new one eventually but it was still an unfortunate experience with the Orca Solo Pen Kit.

Conclusion:
Over all the unit has been preforming better than I imagined. It’s small flavorful stature and convenience of use makes it a device that would be ideal for a lot of people who are on the go. The build quality of the device could use a little improvement to strengthen the tank since you technically have the double threaded coil holding it all together. Since my package didn't contain any spares I am curious to see what is included. It would be real nice to get a spare glass piece since that is the most fragile item.

With the price point of around $20 US, I believe this closed system device would be hit in today's vaping market. Its low wattage vaping is ideal for nico-salts since it mimics the nicotine rush you get from a cigarette with similar vapor production and throat hit from a cigarette. This would be a great device for those heavy smokers in transition from cigarettes to vaping.

I want to thank Vaporesso for selecting me to be a part of the Power Users Program, providing me a review Orca Solo unit, and allowing my feedback be heard.
For those who are interested may visit Vaporesso's site to purchase the Orca Solo Pen Kit.
