Sen. Charles Schumer called electronic cigarettes “ticking time bombs” on Sunday, as he urged the Food and Drug Administration to use its new authority to probe — and possibly recall — the devices.
“We’ve all heard the old adage, where there’s smoke there may be fire — well here, where there’s smoke, there’s sometimes explosions,” Schumer said, citing a rash of incidents in recent weeks, including four New Yorkers being injured by exploding vaporizers.
“It’s bad enough that e-cigarettes cause nicotine addiction . . . but now it seems they’re doubling as a ticking time bomb,” he added.
Last week, the FDA extended its authority to regulate e-cigs, cigars, hookah tobacco and other tobacco products under the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.
“The agency should use this authority to investigate . . . these repeated explosions,” Schumer said.
The injured include a 14-year-old Brooklyn boy who is now blind in one eye.
