Debuting Thursday, the concept of Complications isn't, well, complicated, but the pilot goes out of its way to make it seem as though it is. The USA drama from Matt Nix (creator of Burn Notice) follows the jaded but kind Dr. John Ellison (played by Jason O'Mara). His life changes when he saves a boy injured in a drive-by shooting -- both medically and by turning vigilante and going after one of the men responsible for the shooting. The act involves him in a battle between gangs as he has to protect the child from a death mark.
Straightforward, right? The pilot spells out these events through a series of flashbacks. Sometimes there are even flashbacks within flashbacks. The tactic can sometimes build and make points more dramatic, but here, it's a heavy weight pulling the story down. The episode introduces tension in the opening minutes and never regains it. Reviewing the past via Ellison talking to a therapist at the hospital muddles and slows the pacing.
