For a two-issue series, Convergence: Action Comics bit off a little more than it can chew. The book attempts to divide its focus between the pre-Crisis Superman, Lois Lane and Power Girl on one side and the cast of Superman: Red Son on the other, and winds up doing justice to neither side in the end. It's just as well that the other cities teased in the intro page for issue #1 never actually appear in this story.

It's a shame the series doesn't maintain its focus on Superman et al. Writer Justin Gray is able to capture the tone of this more innocent, carefree Superman era well without getting too sentimental or campy. The Red Son characters offer an interesting contrast in that regard, hailing as they do from a darker and more morally ambiguous world. But in the end, here's just something off about the way characters like Red Son Luthor and Red Son Superman are portrayed. They're bland and two-dimensional.
