Crackdown 3 Doesn’t Look Good, but it Feels Pretty Great

There’s no doubt that Crackdown 3 makes a poor first impression. Even running on a high-end PC (and, presumably, the Xbox One X), its cel-shaded look is muddily textured, its animations jerky and occasionally illegible, and its world unwelcomely porous, with character models clipping through buildings they climb over or ragdoll physics kicking in at unexpected moments. As the world loaded and I began finding my way around, I began to seriously worry about a game I’ve been excited to play for years at this point.



And then I picked up a gun that fired miniature black holes.



The original Crackdown made its name on how good it felt to play (well, that and a Halo beta) - jumping the height of a skyscraper, throwing a car at a squad of goons, and going wherever you wanted to, whenever you wanted to. Playing a condensed version of the new Crackdown’s campaign mode, that famous feel-good element began to shine through the more I played, and very clearly builds on the original game’s strengths.
