Crown RBA Vertical Build

So ... I've been using the Crown RBA for several months now and must say that I like it much better than the stock coils. I've been building with 26g 316L SS wire. It takes some practice to get the S-Wick technique down but when you do it works great. I can still top fill with generally no leakage as long as I close the AFC.

Recently a buddy who also got the Crown tank with RBA gave me his as he was sick of it leaking on him. I tried walking him through solutions but he didn't want to deal with it. I found there was a slight air leakage from the top seal so I just flipped the O-Rings over and no more leakage. So now I have two Crowns with RBAs. :shades:

I've been playing around with vertical builds on one of them for the last week or so. (Sorry ... no pics.) It's certainly a PITA to wick but works AMAZING and is definitely as good as if not better than my experience with the stock coils. One problem I was having is that I kept getting cotton UNDER the coil which would restrict airflow. I tried opening the AFC more which helped a bit. But I just found a solution that I thought I would share. Now I simply put a skinny screwdriver through the coil and down into the connection below. Then when I'm pushing cotton around the coil with a small flathead screwdriver there's no way I'll get cotton shoved underneath the coil. Hope that makes sense.

I have a leftover .25 ohm stock coil that I could never get to work well as my previous mod only went up to 50w. My new mod goes up to 75w so I figured I'd give it another try. When using it in power mode the tank got VERY VERY hot at anything over 60w. I ended up using it for an evening in Temp mode. The flavor was decent but not great. And I blew through 3/4 of a tank of juice as well as most of an 18650 battery in several hours.

So with the RBA and especially this vertical build the flavor and clouds are great and I'm not using nearly as much juice or battery to get there. My vertical build is at .6 ohms and I'm running 22w at 430-470 deg. F. The mod I'm using is a Evic VTC Mini.

Just thought I'd share my experience in case anybody else was contemplating a vertical build on the Crown RBA. I'll update the thread if I run into any issues.

Toss up some pics , I'm grabbing a rba base for mine and am wondering about the wicking and a vertical coil is what I would like to do also .

I just re-wicked it so won't be getting any pics at the moment. Usually I re-wick every 3-5 days depending on the juice I've been using. I'll try to get some pics the next time I'm re-wicking. :D

I've tried the Vertical coil builds both on the RBA and the stock coil, it's just "OK" and good if you just want basic builds. I'm stuck on Fused Claptons and there just isn't enough room for them. What works for me is staying with a 2mm di and the airflow is about the same as with the stock coils.

Yeah I'm not doing any fancy builds. I just started making my own coils a few months ago. There's enough room for a single slightly spaced coil in the Crown RBA though. They're working great for me and I'm saving $$$, juice and battery life compared to the stock coils which was my main point. ;)

I'm currently using a 2.5mm diameter on my single coils. I assumed that if I wanted to use anything like Claptons I would need more room to work with.

If you really wanna have the flavor pop in the Crown, Fused Clapton's. I spin up some 30x2/36 SS and use them in my Crown, awesome flavor. Making fused claptons really is pretty damn easy. Just get some good quality wire, you need

1. Drill
2. Ball bearing fishing spinners

Link together about 3 or 4 of the spinners, loop the inner core wire through and tighten in your drill chuck with the wrapping wire then just go. First few wires you're going to mess up but then it just clicks. Super easy.

Also spinning your own you have quality control and use good wire. Most pre-made wire I've seen/used is mediocre at best, most really is crap Chinese wire. I source my wire from Kidney Puncher, great quality wire and you can really tell a difference.

Here's an excellent vid on how to make Clapton wire

Thanks for the link ... I may try that at some point. However I'm a bit confused. In your first post you said there isn't enough room. Or did you mean it works when you make the inner diameter .2mm. I may just try some twisted coils first to try and get the hang of things.

Just out of curiosity what resistance are you getting from your Fused Clapton's made this way?

Not enough room when doing a vertical build, horizontal all is good.

I like building around .25-.35 with my Crown

Ah ... I getcha now. I like around .5 ohm myself. Maybe an extra wrap would get me close. Have you tried just Twisted coils before? If so how did they perform for you?

Yeah, used to do twisted before I learned how to make fused claptons. You can get fused to .5 fairly easy, but with Fused Claptons generally I like to build just a bit lower due to more wire to ramp up. So if you like .5 with a fused clapton try .4 or even .35

OK ... thanks for the tips! :shades: What gauge were you using for the twisted as I may start there? And I'd prefer to use SS 316L. I'm guessing maybe 2x28 gauge twisted? I just watched a video where Rip Trippers made a triple wrap micro coil using 32 gauge Kanthal that looked interesting.

With SS 28 gauge would be good, personally I've found 30 gauge best for my Crowns. I also took a 32 twisted then used them for the core for a fused clapton and wrapped with a 36, incredible with Tanks, especially the Crown. So it would be a 32x4/36.

Here's a shot of it when I first tried the wire in an RDA, works ok with an RDA but with Tanks it really makes them come alive.

Hey ... just a thought on making Fused Clapton's for the Crown RBA. You mentioned that you were making a 2mm coil. If you made a 2.5mm coil with the same wire wouldn't that bring the resistance up a bit ... perhaps closer to the .5 ohms that I'm looking to hit? Or is there not enough room for a 2.5mm Fused Clapton in the RBA? If not how about a regular Clapton?

Really restricts the airflow, 2mm di is the sweet spot. I've fit 4 wraps of 30x2/36 without any problems. You can also go with 32 gauge to get it even higher, I've also put 32x2/36, but 30 gauge is the sweetspot for me.

OK ... Thanks so much for all your help and advice. I'll be sure to post when I try to make some Twisted, Clapton or Fused Clapton coils. :D

Has anyone tried opening the air slots a bit bigger on this RBA? I can't get the air flow right like on the stock coils. When I build vertically I end up pushing just a tiny bit of cotton up against the slots. If I don't it leak for sure.

That's strange. I generally only have mine open 1 or 2 notches although I like my airflow a bit tight. Like I mentioned in the first post make sure that your cotton isn't getting under the coil over the airflow hole. I use a screwdriver or anything with the same inner diameter of your coil and push it right through the coil to the bottom. Then when you're pushing the cotton around your coil you won't cover the airflow hole at the bottom. The airflow should come up through the center of your coil if you're building vertically with the cotton all around similar to a stock coil.

The slots on the side of the RBA are only for juice flow as far as I understand it. So I wouldn't make them much larger unless you want a lot of flooding.

Dave.

I keep the air flow on the bottom open 4 clicks to max. The slot I refer to is on the RBA itself. Yes the screwdriver down the center helps wonders and I wrap cotton on the outside of coil. I don't want to ruin my RBA but think a larger slot would make the draws easier. I'm refering to the Uwell Crown RBA. Something else was pictured above.

OK ... Finally some pics. First I want to say sorry for the crappy pics. It was really difficult to get my cell phone to even focus this much. Second I'm NOT an experienced coil builder. I've probably only build a dozen or so horizontal coils and this is my first vertical. Well I actually made 2 larger verticals in my RDA once but this is my first for the Crown RBA.

So while not pretty it seems to work quite well. It's a real PITA to wick though compared to the horizontal coil but it's worth it IMO.
