Ever since that final page of Batman #50, it's been clear that Tom King's Batman run has been building to a major showdown between Batman and Bane (even more significant than their previous clash in "I Am Bane"). But as it turns out, that confrontation comes a bit sooner than expected. Issue #59 explores what happens when Batman discovers the architect of his recent misery and sets out in search of a little payback. But as he quickly learns, there's a difference between knowing one's enemy and actually defeating them.

Issue #59 employs a time-tested story structure with the series. King's regularly script alternates between flashbacks to Batman's meeting with Penguin and the present-day confrontation between the Dark Knight and Bane in Arkham Asylum. That constant-back-and-forth enhances the general energy of the issue. It also prolongs the dramatic tension of Batman and Bane's meeting, leaving readers to wonder just what Bane has up his sleeve that he's willing to tip his hand so soon. Luckily, this series continues to be great about using color to establish scenes and help differentiate between parallel story beats. The flashbacks are shrouded in dark, moody blues, while the Arkham scenes are brightly lit and intentionally garish.
