This is an advance review of Noelle -- starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader -- which is available to stream on Disney+ at launch on November 12.
Noelle, written and directed by Marc Lawrence (Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics), is a boisterous, cheerful holiday adventure charged by Anna Kendrick's fun turn as Santa's spirited daughter, Noelle Kringle.
Without Kendrick's committed Elf-esque performance though, there's not much (mince) meat on these bones. Noelle is quirky, but not clever. For sure, this is a capable Christmas caper for kids, but sadly it doesn't cross over into "adults will laugh too" territory. It's perfectly benign family viewing, but there are elements to it -- from the not-quite-there CGI effects to the slightly out-of-touch gags -- that make it feel like it's a decade out of date. For example: a running bit involves every kid, no matter what hobbies or activities they're into, wanting an iPad.
