Red Notice has become Netflix’s biggest ever movie hit, at least according to one of its stars, Dwayne Johnson.
The action flick debuted on Netflix earlier this month and has already been watched for almost 280 million hours. According to Dwayne Johnson, who stars in Red Notice as FBI agent John Hartley, that makes it a record breaker.
“Red Notice has officially become THE BIGGEST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF NETFLIX!!!” he confirmed via Instagram. “In under two weeks, we’ve shattered all records and we have many weeks to go.”
Red Notice stars Dwayne Johnson as Agent Hartley – an FBI profiler tasked with aiding Interpol in taking down the high-profile art thief, Nolan Booth (played by Ryan Reynolds). Soon, the pair are forced to work together in a twist on the buddy-cop dynamic – but while the buddy-heist movie has a few thrills, it largely left critics a bit cold.
IGN’s own review explains that: “Three A-listers globetrot and double-cross each other in Red Notice, a derivative action film that should be much smarter and sexier than it ends up being.” But while Red Notice currently stands at just 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is quite different, with an astounding 92% rating.
Netflix confirmed that Red Notice has been watched for a total of 277.9 million hours since its release on November 5. That would make it one of the streaming service’s most popular movies – second only to the 2018 horror flick, Bird Box (which was viewed for 282 million hours).
Dwayne Johnson’s comments seem to suggest that Red Notice may already have passed that impressive milestone – making it the most watched movie on Netflix. However, Netflix is yet to confirm the film’s final 28 day viewing figures.
