As the title says, Evolv released a new Test firmware (2016-02-12) update for the DNA200. I've been using it since last night. So far so good. Here's what it includes:

This version features (Firmware 2016-02-12):
(1) a new Materials tab where you can store and transfer material settings onto and from the DNA,
[We've included our Ni200, and Steam Engine's SS316 and Ti1. These will be upgraded in the future, if better data becomes available, and others added if others become common.]
(2) the ability to change a profile's material without EScribe, by holding down all three buttons while locked,
(3) Profile Name and Material Name can be displayed on-screen as custom fields,
(4) profiles now have a "Temperature Dominant" option, making temperature the main adjustment for a profile if you want to do so,
(5) for small batteries, in the Mod tab, you can reduce max continuous and pulse battery input currents,
(6) in Help->Language, you can override the language detection,
(7) Device Monitor has "Simulate Button Presses" for remote testing,
(8) Device Monitor can run Python scripts for scientific study and automation,
(9) the ability to adjust the temperature increment, and
(10) various OS compatibility and miscellaneous improvements.

Here's the direct link to the new test firmware (Firmware version 2016-02-23 - EScribe version 1.0.41)

A link to the thread I got it from. This is the where the newest firmware is posted and discussed (it's always added to the top of the first post).

Edit:
Here's the list of changes the newest test 2016-02-23 firmware added to the 2016-02-12 firmware (as per James at Evolv). The download link has been updated above.

This version includes all of the changes of 2016-02-12 and also features:
(1) a friendlier Screen tab,
(2) support for "Hold To Change Material", "Hold To Change Power", and "Temp Locked Hold Up Down" screens,
(3) the speed of power adjustment no longer increases drastically when switching from 0.1W to 1.0W adjustments,
(4) detection of a DNA 200 in recovery mode - now it will suggest a firmware update instead of not showing up until you hit Update Firmware, and
(5) minor bug fixes and improvements to usability

Edit:

A new test firmware has been released. Firmware version 2016-02-29 Escribe version 1..0.42
I haven't personally tried it yet. From James at Evolv, the only changes are as follows:
"This version includes all of the changes of 2016-02-12 and 2016-02-23 and also:
(1) adds contributed translation for German. Thanks German DNA Crew!
(2) fixes .ecig file compatibility and locale issues some European users may have experienced. Restore Defaults should also be more reliable."

*** 2016-08-05 EScribe 1.2 ***
https://downloads.evolvapor.com/escribe/archive/SetupES250_2016-08-05.exe (57MB standardalone installer)
This version improves a lot of the basics of EScribe. Here is a list of improvements, by no means complete:
- Most windows are no longer modal.
- In Options, User Interface allows you to choose a desired complexity.
- This version is more modular. Device Monitor, Calculator, Production Utility, and Serial Terminal are now all optional install and can run separately.
- Other changes.

Device Monitor has been improved as well:
- You do not have to start EScribe to launch Device Monitor. It can be launched independently from the Start menu.
- You can run multiple copies of Device Monitor, and uploading/downloading settings will pause it.
- You can scroll back in time.

This version can communicate with DNA 60, 75, 200, and 250.

Edit:
Evolv just released a new update that fixes a couple of bugs that were on the one released on 8-5-16.

Edit. Here's the link to the newest Service Pack:

[EARLY]
*** EScribe 1.2 SP4 ***
https://downloads.evolvapor.com/SetupES_1_2_SP4_ServicePack.exe (11MB service pack)
This service pack is mostly bug fixes.
On the EScribe side:
- This resolves some scaling issues in Large Fonts mode / on high-DPI screens.
- Get Information shows which tests were actually performed by the manufacturer in Production Utility.
- Get Information's Manufacturer link did not work in 1.2 SP3. This has been fixed.
- When you had more than one DNA device connected, the auto-connect did not automatically select the new one in the Connect dialog. This has been fixed.
- Minor compatibility and bug fixes.
On the device side:
- Fixed a bug on the DNA 250 that could cause its charging to be slow with certain USB cables (in my tests, the problem cables were flat).
Other:
- For DNA 250, Production Utility now requires charge tests to be at least 900 mA. This may require a powered USB hub.

Edit: Evolve just released a new Service Pack that among other things fixes some mods losing the battery bar when changing settings
[EARLY]
*** EScribe 1.2 SP5 ***
https://downloads.evolvapor.com/SetupES_1_2_SP5_ServicePack.exe (11MB service pack)
This service pack is mostly bug fixes.

On the device side:
- DNA 200 and DNA 250 no longer lose the battery meter on startup sometimes.
- Calibration values have been improved slightly for newer DNA 200s and DNA 250s. (More accurate USB Voltage, mainly.)
- Temperature Protected and other messages now show the correct number of flashes again.
- Some VaporShark DNA 200s would reset charging when above 0.8A with 1.2 SP3 and 1.2 SP4. They now charge at full speed.

On the EScribe side:
- Device Monitor no longer shows Battery Cell 3 on 2-cell devices (except in debug mode).
- Get Information shows test information in an easier-to-read form.
- Production Utility's Battery Test is now more thorough. It also shows a progress bar.
- Production Utility's Fire Test completes more quickly now. It also shows a progress bar.
- This resolves some more scaling issues in Large Fonts mode and some crash bugs.
- Minor bug and compatibility fixes.

Edit: Here's a link to the newest Service Pack:
[EARLY]
*** EScribe 1.2 SP5.2 ***
https://downloads.evolvapor.com/SetupES_1_2_SP5_2_ServicePack.exe (12MB service pack)
This service pack is minor bug fixes.

On the EScribe side:
- EScribe no longer has EEPROM Read Errors with some 1.2 SP5 devices. It can now upload to and download from them correctly. (With these devices, manually updating the firmware can still be useful to speed up uploading and downloading.)
- Help->Report Bug and Help->Send Feedback go to the Help Desk.
- TLS 1.2 is now used for secure connections if available.
- The progress bar displays correctly when the desktop theme is Windows Classic.

It also improves Production Utility:
- Production Utility now checks that the thermistor is working correctly. (You will need to be in a room warmer than 0F to use Production Utility.)
- Production Utility now shows a code identifying the firmware being loaded on, to prevent accidental loading of other firmware. Current firmware hashes are:
-- DNA 60 - 1.2 SP3 - DAC2
-- DNA 60 Small Screen - 1.2 SP3 - A103
-- DNA 75 - 2016-06-05 - 95D6
-- DNA 200 - 1.2 SP5 - 7E55
-- DNA 250 - 1.2 SP5 - F5C7

- The error dialog doesn't go behind the Production Utility window any more.

Edit 8/10/17
Evolv has released a Mac Beta version. I don't have a Mac so this is basically just a heads up to Max users. I can't try it myself, but I figured I should let Mac users know,

Ready for a kanthal boost mode.

I didn't even think of that because it's been awhile since I've used Kanthal. I can't remember the last time I've used anything but TC (I must be an odd ball lol). I have 3 different gauges of SS316L, a 200 foot roll of 430 SS, a couple of rolls of Ti01, and a few different rolls of Ni200. I feel like I could open up an Electronics store. Wires R US :D:D:D

Cheers,
Steve

Not an oddball, since SS kanthal has gone the way of the dodo for a lot of us. but, I hear allt of folks saying that was a must have feature, with the 133W config, evolv could really sell a shitload more boards with it.

As the title says, Evolv released a new BETA firmware update for the DNA200. I've been using it since last night. So far so good. Here's what it includes:

This version features:

Cheers,
Steve
Finally put it on last night! Their SS profile is specified for UD SS, this is perfect!

Ready for a kanthal boost mode.

I don't see anything on the list I'm really excited about. 4 months or so for an update and adding a materials tab that still needs Escribe is an improvement but kind of meh. Would much rather see on board TCR adjustment. Temp dominant is nice for those that want to adjust temperature all the time but not really adding anything just making it more easily accessible. Adding Ni200, Ti and SS316 to default is an improvement over just the Ni200 & Kanthal but still any wire other than that cant be used without first uploading data from Escribe. Maybe I'm missing something but 4 months of development time seems a lot of missed opportunities.

No on device TCR adjustment
No on device Preheat adjustment
No Preheat in Power mode
Not able to disable coil detection or set a "Profile Lock" to keep from dropping out of temp mode

Good news is my DNA 200 is supposed to be repaired and being shipped back to me so maybe I'll get a chance to use the update before to long.

Well, I like it.

Its still more adjustments than any other mod, and so long as inhale it set where I want on one lf the 8 profiles I don't have a need to make adjustments anyway. come to think of it, it has not needed an adjustment yet this year.
Kanthal boost is the only feature from anything else I miss. And 316ss solves that.

I'm very happy as well, the only mods I use anymore. I loaded up my material tab with every wire I might use. Can load any of the 8 profiles with any of them on the fly. Heck I even have Nife 30/48 and SS304 on it just in case I ever get them to go along with Ti01, Ni200, SS316L, and SS430. The Temp Dominate feature is something I like more than I thought I would. My only complaint is it doesn't make me coffee in the morning lmao :D

I don't disagree it has more adjustments than most any other mod, Just a large portion of those adjustments are for settings like, Case, Battery, Atty that are unnecessary on most other mods. Being a board manufacturer and not an ecig manufacturer it makes sense for them to have those adjustments available for the various makers. I'd just like to see them focus more on the vaping settings for the consumer vs mod settings for the makers and allow the consumer to use the product without the need for external software. Escribe should be an option not a requirement IMO. They can do it, they just haven't yet and it certainly is killing a portion of their market with Mac users, users without pc's, users that just want to vape and not dink with klunky software etc..

come to think of it, it has not needed an adjustment yet this year.

Lol, I bet you haven't. Are you still vape free?

Yes I remember seeing your charts with SS316, not really utilizing temp limiting, mostly setting power to reach whatever temperature your build & juice would get to, but far beneath hitting temp limiting and getting the ramp up from Preheat that you desired.
http://vapingunderground.com/threads/vaporshark-dna-200-discussion.118239/page-6#post-701861

Honestly haven't seen any charts with anyone getting smooth temp limiting with SS316 unless they were running under set temp limits as you did. I quit trying with the SS316 and went with Nife52 and it's working well so far.

After updating all my DNA200 mods I got the itch to get something new. Well Volcano sent me an Email with a 20% off coupon for Presidents Day. That combined with some points I had there allowed me to order the Limited Edition Blood Red Lavabox for a tad under $130 shipped (Fed EX 2 Day). My first mod that's not Black or Silver (excluding my Lost Vape Wood Mod). Might not be for everyone, but it caught my eye as something different. I'm really looking forward to receiving it.

This was the clincher:
"What makes the LAVABOX DNA 200 Blood Red Edition special is its unique crimson red look. All LAVABOX DNA 200 devices are treated with a black anodization process to increase its resistance to daily wear and tear. But what makes the Blood Red LAVABOX special is in its final look. The Blood Red LAVABOX has been specially treated with a high-grade oxidized red pigment to create its exclusive deep red finish. Not only does this treatment make for a truly aesthetically pleasing device, the special coating adds an increased textural feel for an anti-slip finish."

My Black Lavabox's finish is tough, not a scratch on it and I don't baby my mods. I'm expecting the same from the Blood Red Edition. The extra texture for even more grip is intriguing.

Not completely no. But more less just taste testing and build testing.... If that makes sense.
But I'm cycling and doing everything on one of a group DNA200 mods with a set of Attis that I settled on. The addiction is over(for new gear and nicotine) it's more less fun, pure enjoyment the tech and to help smokers quit. I stopped or slowed to an almost stop because I feel like I hit a plateu and got bored with the same thing coming out just in different form.
-look another side airflow 3 post rda! But this one is better than that side airflow 3 post rda.
Between that and everyone having to scream to the mountain tops that this 200w mod that can't really deliver 200w is better than that 200w mod that can't really deliver 200w, just exhausts me.
-in short I got tired of the incessant jack assery, when the entire point was to just quit smoking and help other people quit smoking.

Good for you. Keep focused and don't get hooked on the nic again with the taste testing. :) I did that with cigs years ago, had quit for about 6 months then decided to just have 1, 1 turned into 2, 2 into 3 and before I knew it I was back to 2 packs a day. Took another 10 yrs to quit again.

And your point is valid with the different gear. If you get down to the basics we're heating a heating element to vaporize e-juice off of a wicking material. Sure some will do it different than others, have different features, have different air flow, power delivery etc.. but were still just making vapor. I probably don't fit the norm with my SX mini's vaping around 23J most the time but I get a satisfying vape from that for me so no real need for anything more powerful. I did order an RX200 for $35 a couple weeks ago but it wasn't for the power but more for the run time. Thinking it should be good for a weekend trip to the lake without needing to recharge. And if I lose it in the lake oh well not a huge expense lost.

a dna-200 watt mod is what I got and it seems to work ok but is there is a better one to use? i have nickle and kanthal single coil most-time at less than 40 watt. iyou are not gung-ho with escribe and so. what mod would you think better?

how to up-date the escribe? easy or hard?

Escribe is easy as pie to update. Lordmage posted the link for the update in a post above. Just save it and run it. That's it. He also posted a link to Evolv's Early Adopter Forum. It's a forum dedicated to the DNA200 chip and mods.

Evolv themselves are the one's who released the firmware update. Here's the link if you want to read up on it. To answer your question directly, it won't void your warranty. I've updated all my DNA200 mods and have been very happy with it so far.

It's pretty easy and is a key area of why I find the DNA superior to the yihi boards.
Preheat is two setting, the length of time you want it applied for, the power you want applied and how close to the set temp you're willing to heat it to.
I don't recall the exact definition, but my ideal vape is SS on my petri RDA, dual coil 0.19 ohm build which is 24g 3mm bit and 7 wraps.
I set it to 50w at 430degrees with a 60w preheat for 1.5 seconds and a punch of 8.5

What that tells the board is give it 60w from the time I hit the power button until it at 430degrees or the duration of 1.5 seconds is reached, whichever comes first. Then it will do what it can to stay below 430degrees not to exceed 430degrees or 50w.
I hope that explains it better.

On the firmware updates it's really easy and takes literally 3 seconds to complete and it saves your current settings. Evolv also has their own forum on their website with a lot of knowledgable people there willing to help and the Chief designer pops in from time to time.

That surprises me you like Escribe that much. Or am I misunderstanding you? Having to use Escribe every time I want to adjust the preheat irritates the hell out of me. All my pc's are downstairs so I have to go downstairs connect to pc and make whatever adjustments I want. I normally don't change my temps or power settings once setup. Typically if my wick is running a little dry I'll change the M or ML to Soft, if it's saturated I'll bump it to Powerful or Powerful+ and keep chugging. IMO the biggest oversight they did with the board was to not enable all settings to be made directly on board. I really thought they would have made it independent of the software by now.

Since you seem to dislike the DNA200 so much, why don't you just sell it and move on to something you do like? It seems like you prefer to complain instead of just moving on like most adults would.

Can all settings be made without software using the M or ML? What is Powerful Powerful+? Who makes M and ML?

If your directing that at me it wasn't a complaint but a fact of what's required to operate the device and what I have to do to use it and adjust it. Like it or not it's how it is. But if you want to make a serious offer I'd take it into consideration.

As the title says, Evolv released a new BETA firmware update for the DNA200. I've been using it since last night. So far so good. Here's what it includes:

This version features:

Cheers,
Steve
Where do I find (9) the ability to adjust increment? I'd like to have the ability to increment/decrement by 5F, if possible.

It's on the theme tab at the bottom.

Cheers,
Steve

Edit You can choose between 10, 5, 2, or 1 degree increments F or C at the bottom of the theme tab.

I don't see the problem with using escribe at all. Figure with Kanthal escribe is a nonissue since to get your set wattage as output.
So that leaves 8 programmable options in escribe for TC. I only use 316l so I have 8 presets open form the 5 toppers I normally rotate. I have nor once been put during the day and thought 'damn I need to adjust me preheat punch' I run with the Petri, aeolus, hurricane, kf4 or tfv4
the first two have the same build and the second two have the same build, so that's three different bullds and 8 options.
my first two profiles are my rdas, my second two my tanks and the tfv4 normally is run like one of the rdas, so I have 4 options left that are just playtime options.
either I'm a simple vapor or maybe I'm missing something; because, simce I got the first DNA200 in the sx boards that I loved so much have not even been turned on. Nothing against them at all, I just find this to be much easier. Swap top, make two clicks and done :)

Ahh, I recall we had a similar conversation a few months back I was in same situation but was using about 5 or so different wire types then. Down to 3 now so perhaps it will be easier for me to setup different profiles. Being you use a dripper some of the time I can see not needing to adjust for those as much where I always use tanks and if not wicking well for my settings sometimes needs more frequent adjustments. I strive for that single wire to use but the SS316 I had wasn't it for me.

See I can see using multiple tc wires as complicating things. But, even before I slowed dowm my vape habits I had transitioned to using SS for literally everything other than my 22g mechanical builds.
So that had me drastically streamlined.even before I had settled on those as my go to. You've seen the pics lf my crap. Haha I had a damn vape shop, lol
I also don't know to many vapors that use multiple different wires outside of A1 and a tc wire.

I had forgotten about that discussion we had but back then I was searching for a good TC wire (and still am) with Ni200, Ti01, SS316L but now I'm pretty much down to Ni200 and Nife52 and occasional Kanthal. Only been using the Nife52 for a week or so, so not sure it's the one or not, kind of still figuring it out but it seems to be on par with Ni200 in regulation with some added durability. Still considering SS430 though just haven't tried it yet.

Agreed. I have Kanthal, Ni200, Ti01, 316L, and 430. I've gotten to the point where I've changed all my attys over to 430. I think most people tend to gravitate to the wire they like best. In my case, 430 is great. With a higher TCR than 316, 317, and 304 it works better for TC. It can also be used for straight power mode if you get the urge to do that.

I tried it, its ok. I went back TO the 316, because with the infrequency that I build now, its just easier to get ahold of.

That's the way I am with the 316l... but it came down to the simple fact that its widely available

You're welcome buddy. I'm always happy to help. You made a great choice imo. I think you are really going to like it. I know I really like all of mine! Since getting my DNA200 mods, they have retired all my other mods to the shelf.

Cheers,
Steve

Yes, temperature protection just means it's reached the temperature you set it at and it's backing down the power to keep you there.

What wire are you using? The temperature curve with my SS 316L wire isn't that smooth.

It's working dude.
Kanger are my least favorite of the premade heads, but that's a personal thing.
You can't be to hard on someone 'Trash taking.' You have to realize, were all opinionated ex-smokers. When you get into the yihi vs evolv debate you end up with opinionated exsmoker tech geaks. Just stay focused on what you like, and what is going to keep you off the cigs. That's what it is important. And, don't forget to share your knowledge with people finding their way.
The truth is, without both companies we wouldnt have either. Competition breeds innovation. AND Vlad is a cool guy, I've learned a while lot from him and respect him. yihi does make a good a damn product! But, I think the two are targeted at a slightly different customer base.

i will save some money and get some more tanks. i saw last night where some guys say kanger heads can not be too stable. i think it is ok what a dude likes an also what i like may be not the same. that is ok and i only care what i like if it helps me not smoke. what a guy tell me i should like and how bad they say what i like is not good then i say poo-poo. not here but i saw a guy say he did not like something and then the guy stopped there. that is ok because i had what he did not like. he did not keep telling it over and over saying how bad my stuff is. this may not make any cents but i think it is the same as you say that us guys have opinions and thats ok but i do not care to have it rammed down my craw over and over. i still have to learn more but if i can help i will. thanks for all the help here.

I didn't realize it was being crammed I know how that feels. there was a group on another forum that was like that with a product line That is no fun. We should all be here to help each other and especially help the new folks.

That makes sense. Nickel wire should be more accurate. However, I personally prefer using SS wire, currently 316L. I'm thinking of trying 304 next.
