Even though the core Hellboy saga wrapped several years ago, creator Mike Mignola is keeping plenty busy with his other shared comic book universes. Mignola and collaborator Warwick Johnson-Cadwell are kicking off 2021 with Falconspeare, a new chapter in the story of eccentric monster hunters Professor J.T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox, and Ms. Mary Van Sloan.

Falconspeare is a follow-up to 2017's graphic novel Mr. Higgins Comes Home and its 2020 sequel Our Encounters With Evil, with Johnson-Cadwell both writing and drawing and Hellboy mainstay Dave Stewart providing colors. As with its predecessors, Falconspeare offers a slightly more comedic, Victorian mystery-flavored alternative to Mignola's familiar Hellboy stories. Here's Dark Horse's official description for Falconspeare:

This winter Dark Horse Comics will publish FALCONSPEARE, an original graphic novel featuring Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell’s characters Professor J.T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox, and Ms. Mary Van Sloan. This eerie Victorian-style mystery delivers horror, humor, and the kind of off-kilter, charming twists that fans of Mignola and Johnson-Cadwell’s previous collaborations MR. HIGGINS COMES HOME and OUR ENCOUNTERS WITH EVIL: ADVENTURES OF PROFESSOR J.T. MEINHARDT AND HIS ASSISTANT MR. KNOX have come to expect. Monster hunters extraordinaire Professor Meinhardt, Mr. Knox, and Ms. Van Sloan have teamed up to slay spooks and investigate the uncanny before, but now they'll tackle a question that's haunted them for years: What happened to their friend and vampire slayer extraordinaire, James Falconspeare?

"In Falconpeare, we get a brief peek into the past of our main characters, before Professor Meinhardt's mustache got so bushy and when Mr. Knox still had a few hairs on his head. They’ve spent their lives together coming to grips with their unusual occupation, and there is a whole world of stories to tell about how they get to where we’ve met them. And after, too," Johnson-Cadwell tells IGN. "James Falconspeare is a force for good, a hero who strives to live a lawful and honorable life. But when those principles become boundaries that prevent him from fighting against evil, he must find a way to right the situation."

Falconspeare is available for preorder now and will be released in both print and digital versions on Wednesday, January 12.
