During Bethesda's E3 2015 Press Conference, the publisher revealed that Fallout 3's tactical combat mechanic VATS -- Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System -- will return in Fallout 4, allowing players to pause the battle, take aim at a target, and take a chance to hit or miss. The strategic system was implemented in Fallout 3 in an effort to maintain the series' roots as a tactical combat game.
The news came during an extended gameplay demo of Fallout 4. A pack of Mole Rats burrowed out of the ground and attacked the main character's dog companion. The second this happened, time froze, and the player had the ability to target exactly which enemies they wanted to attack and where.
