A new version of Fight Club is now available online in China, and it has a very different ending. The new version, made available on the Tencent Video streaming platform over the weekend, alters the anarchist message of David Fincher’s cult classic, with the authorities foiling the plot at the last minute.
“The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding,” reads the new coda as the film fades to black. “After the trial, Tyler was sent to lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012.”
The original ending was far more anti-capitalist.
In the film’s closing scenes, Edward Norton’s narrator kills off his dangerous alter ego, Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt), with a well-placed gunshot to his own head. Then, along with love interest Marla Singer (played by Helena Bonham Carter), he watches as Tyler’s plan to destroy the global economy comes to fruition.
As several skyscrapers explode and topple across the city, it’s suggested that Tyler’s anarchist group has wiped out all debt by literally toppling the banks.
Tencent Video has yet to comment on the changes made to the Chinese release.
Either way, it looks as though fans aren’t happy.
“How would the studio allow this?” asked one fan via Twitter. “What about director David Fincher? Doesn't he have to sign off on this? I can't imagine him ever doing that unless he thought this was just so hilarious he had to do it.”
In the meantime, Fight Club has retained a strong cult following since its release in 1999, with IGN naming it as one of the most ‘90s movies of the 1990s.
