Finishes on Mods

I don't know if it is that I have really caustic sweat or what, but none of the mods that I have had with a finish seem to last more than a month or two before they start chipping or wearing off.

I once had a Vamo 3 that did it, but wrote that one off easily, because it was a cheap mod that I picked up at a flea market. I went with an IPV iTaste SVD, that still looks incredibly good today (stainless steel), but the fire button on that was total crap. It does still look great though, even though it is now obsolete (15W max and doesn't fire under 1 ohm). I went with a Cloupor mini (great for its size, lasted a year and died promptly on around its anniversary). finish was total crap. Then I went to a KBox Mini, which was a semi serviceable mod for about a year (the paint chipped off in about a month). I hated that I couldn't lock the buttons for the wattage, without shutting off the mod, too. Next, I went to the Cuboid, which for some reason a number of people hate... Even though I happen to think that it functionally is a great mod. The black finish on it even held up a little bit, and is still trying to stay on everywhere that my sweat has not broken it down (bare metal exactly where my hand rests when holding it).

You've read this far, and are probably wondering why you read all that shit and what the fuck my point is. Fair enough.

I've come to the conclusion (that at least for me), and (based on pictures I've seen people post of their mods with similar finish wear) I think I am not alone, that mods pretty much universally have craptastic paint jobs. The only solution that I have found is to get a stainless mod, as I never seem to get a mod that I can find a silicone sleeve for (most of them seem to look like crap, anyway).

Now, I do have a "more modern" stainless mod (just picked up a new cuboid, in stainless).

However, there does seem to be fairly limited options for this. I went to about a dozen vape shops over the last week or so, and found that there really are not a lot of stainless options and that not all that appear to be stainless actually are,

I thought I would ask people to post stainless mods (that they have actually held in their hand, and can reasonably vouch for their being actual stainless), and maybe for people that have mods they use for their ADV and still have their finish on them after a year of use (without a protective covering). If a mod can handle ADV for a year without a cover, that company may have found a legit way to keep a finish on a mod.

Plastic mods are not always a viable option, either. I don't know what other people do for a living, but I work on an assembly line for customizing emergency vehicles for specialized options. I've broken a cell phone in a Defender Otter Box at work, so I don't think a plastic mod would survive. I know by experience, that not every vaper out there works under florescent lighting or enjoys the wonders of air conditioning.

I've had a Fuchai 200 watt mod for some time now and although I got it with a silicone sleeve I don't use it. The finish is exactly the same as the day I bought it. No scratches or chips or blistering paint. I know it is an older model but thought I would chime in anyways

Maybe get some 6061 Aluminum mods where the finished is anodized. You have to scratch it down to the bare metal to remove the finish.

You never really will find a indestructible mod. Not for the sub ohm vaper. DOVPO made a 35 watt mod a long time ago that was nearly indestructible, but it was never really popular.

Your conclusion of craptasic paint jobs, is correct. Kanger is notorious for having about the worst paint in the industry. No one is really good at paint.

Like @UncleRJ said, J-Wraps, or any wrap, saves your paint.

You just have to treat any mods like a cell phone without a case. Handle with care.

I can don't expect "indestructible" for sub $100 mods, but I do expect them to look decent, when given reasonable care. If it gets scratched b/c there was crap in my pocket or I drop it on a hard surface, that's on me. If my sweat eats through the finish or stains it (which happens with cheaper/low grade aluminum), then that falls under design flaw.

I actually saw one of those DOVPO 35W units at a vape store last week. If it could do over 35W, I prob would have bought it. If their synthetic marble ones had less of a pastel/feminine color look to it, I'd even consider one of those. The rubberized coating on their Twisted Messes is mediocre looking, but what would really kill it for me is that cheap fake gold coating on the buttons.

Which validates my point in making this thread, and attempting to solicit input about mods that either hold up with a good paint job/other finish (I have seen rubberized mods out there), or are legit SS and will continue to look decent at least long enough for the mod to become obsolete.

Like @UncleRJ said, J-Wraps, or any wrap, saves your paint.

It's an option worth noting, to be sure. If only they actually showed examples of their wraps on a variety of mods. I would like to get at least an idea of what it would look like on my box.

You just have to treat any mods like a cell phone without a case. Handle with care.

I can't recall seeing any cell phones with the finish eaten off of them by sweat, though. Most are plastic and/or glass largely, with a very small amount of metal that seems largely there for decoration. If mods mostly had a front and back of largely gorilla glass, this would be a completely different conversation. :)

If you want to keep the finish new, then use a polyurethane paint (clear) from Krylon.

The mod I own with the best finish I have ever seen is my G2. Yeah I know it's a box and it's ugly but it is the most well made mod I own. The build quality all around is top notch. I can honestly say that my G2 looks as good as it did the day it came out of the box and it has been almost a year now. The only mark on it is a slight bit of atty rash around the 510, that's it. For $63.50 brand new or $53.00 for a refurb I believe it is the best bang for the buck mod out there.

The G2 does look pretty solid. I can't imagine trying to pocket that at work, with a tank on it though.

I'm starting to think not everyone likes the idea of stainless steel tanks as much as I do.

I went around checking for skins, and I did find a pretty cool site that actually makes skins out of real wood.

Those are very nice wraps but last time I looked they sere going for ~$25. I was thinking of getting the Red wood (Padauk) for my Black Lavabox DNA200. Nothing wrong with the finish, I just liked the look of the wrap.

All my Aluminum DNA mods finishes look as good as the day I got them. The painted Zinc alloy mods seem to be hit and miss though.

Yeah it's a box so the pocketability of it is just not practical but it is a lot lighter than it looks. In fact its shockingly light. The other mod I have that has really held up finish wise is the Ipv5 SS version. I have a black one as well and it's chipped and flaked all over but the SS one still looks great. The 2 mods I have with the most dissapointing finishes are my VT133 and my Slice. The paint on the Slice is just horrible on the first run models. They claim they have improved it though. My VT133 has a peeling battery door and the frame has quite a few chips and scratches even though I baby this mod. The bottom of the mod is basically worn down to the bare metal. I hear good things about the finish on the Ipv6x but you have to make sure you get a model that has been fixed. The first run had issues.

I wonder how the HΩ SLICE would hold up? It looks much more pocketable than the G2.
