CES 2022 has officially concluded. And like it is every year the largest consumer trade show is held, plenty of announcements have come out, whether it's vaporware, interesting concepts that may or may not ever see the light of day outside of the trade show, and actual products that we know or coming.
CES is also the time for weird tech to be shown off. That is not to say that all of the weird stuff is inherently bad, but if we think about the current consumer tech trends, it is certainly interesting to the degree of raising one's eyebrows. While quirky gadgets come aplenty, are five of the weirdest things to come out of CES 2022.
Samsung is the latest company to embrace non-fungible tokens or NFTs, making it the first major TV maker to support it. The company is looking to bring NFTs onto its 2022 TV lineup which will begin shipping in the coming months. The idea notes that it will allow you to not only display your NFTs, preview and buy NFTs, and learn more about the history of blockchain metadata.
CES has always been a time where automakers show off interesting ideas and concepts or reveal new vehicles coming down the road. This year, BMW raised eyebrows with the reveal of E-Ink a color-changing paint technology. This year, the German automaker flaunted the new tech at the trade show this year using the BMW Flow IX vehicle to flaunt the concept off.
The E-Ink can be toggled with the touch of a button with the colors switching from black, grey, or white. BMW's press release explains that the surface coating "contains many millions of microcapsules, with a diameter equivalent to the thickness of a human hair" and that the exterior tech could increase efficiency in its EVs.
BMW says that E-ink is an "advanced research and design project," so I would not expect any vehicles with E-Ink to arrive any time soon.
Samsung making eco-friendly remotes is nothing new. But at CES 2022, the company announced a new remote charge with solar energy, but with a twist: the Eco Remote charges itself using outdoor and indoor light, but the remote can also harvest radio waves from routers and convert it into energy to power the remote. No AAA batteries are required.
While RGB is a popular addition to any PC gaming rig, if you want something more quirky, CyberPowerPC's showed off a new concept case codenamed Kinetic, which is a full ATX desktop case that has a smart ventilation system upfront.
The case uses "intelligent airflow," featuring 18 individually controlled vents that open and close based on the system's internal current internal temperatures. As PCWorld reports, the case will sample the system's temperature every five seconds and close or open the vents as needed.
CyberPowerPC is expected to launch the Kinetic case this year for $250.
Picture this: a gaming desk that doubles as a modular computer. That's exactly what Razer has visioning with its concept Project Sophia, and it looks like something straight out of a Sci-Fi movie.
Project Sophia includes a customized PCB powered by the latest Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU with the opportunity to swap out parts thanks to a removable, custom-built magnetic chassis. And, as common with most Razer products, it supports the company's RGB Chroma lighting.
In practice, Razer says the idea would be a multidimensional product that all users can benefit from if it comes to fruition. Such as streamers using it into a full broadcast setup to make it easier to manage their streams. Or those that work from home could benefit from the tech by using things like a hotkey module.
Again this is just a concept and may or may not see the light of day. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see if Razer can pull this off, but only time will tell.
