Fox Becomes First Broadcast Network to Stop Reporting Overnight Ratings

Fox will stop distributing ratings of how many viewers watched its programs the first night that they are broadcast, the network announced today.

The overnight ratings from the Nielsen company don't include viewers who watch the shows on DVRs, stream them online or watch on demand, according to Fox's top executives, Dana Walden and Gary Newman. More than one-third of the younger audience watched a Fox show within a week that it aired, but not on the first night.

Nielsen overnight ratings have long been an important metric in the television industry, but both Walden and Newman say that the measurement is outdated.

"Fox is a company that has always prided itself on being forward-thinking, and nothing could be more antiquated than a decades-old measurement that reflects only a portion of our audience," the executives said in a memo. "So together, let's move the ratings conversation into the future."
