Known for his work with Valve and their Steam gaming platform, Gabe Newell has ventured into new ground after investing in ChefSteps, a group of graduates from the Modern Cuisine lab that aim to merge modern tech with cooking.
According to a report from Eater, Chefsteps has launched its first piece of hardware, an immersion circulator called the Joule. It cooks specially sealed food by warming it in a pot of water, allowing it to soak in any spices or seasonings while being heated. The result is often a consistent, tender product with low effort. Newell is no stranger to supporting modern tech, with his company Valve supporting the HTC Vive virtual reality headset and the Steambox, a line of living room PCs that Newell believes will overtake modern consoles.
