GameStop has officially entered the crypto and NFT space. The company announced that it launched its own digital asset wallet that users can download via the Chrome Web Store.

The video game retail chain is going all-in on Crypto, it seems. After launching its own cryptocurrency, the company is now providing a wallet in which to store currency and enable transactions.

GameStop's crypto wallet is self-custodial, which means users have their own private key to access their assets. Additionally, the wallet uses Loopring Layer 2 to facilitate transactions, which supposedly provides faster speeds and lowers the "gas" fees that come with processing Ethereum transactions.

It’s official! The GameStop Wallet is here.

Back in February, GameStop announced that it would be launching an NFT marketplace with the Australian blockchain startup called Immutable X. The company also confirmed that the marketplace will launch sometime during the second quarter of this fiscal year.

The topics of NFTs and crypto have been incredibly divisive and largely unpopular among the gaming community. Companies like Square Enix have embraced the concept, as it had sold off three of its western studios in order to pursue initiatives in AI, cloud gaming, and blockchain. Ubisoft implemented NFTs through Ghost Recon Breakpoint but the endeavor was almost universally panned, and the company announced last month that the game would no longer receive any more new content.

Other developers have pushed back against NFTs. Climate Replay, a group made of various developers, have begun signing anti-NFT pledges in order to bring awareness to the disastrous effects they have on the environment. Valve president Gabe Newell even banned NFTs from Steam due to "sketchy behavior."
