Girl Meets World: "Girl Meets Fish" Review

Coming off a string of great episodes, this week's "Girl Meets Fish" was a disappointing step down in quality -- not because it didn't include any form of Boy Meets World nostalgia (although that admittedly didn't help), but because the premise was so obviously aimed at elementary school children. That's not to say younger kids can't enjoy this show too, but usually the writers do a better job of making the storylines inclusive for all ages, not just one demographic. That said, there were still some fun scenes and amusing moments here, enough to not fully tune out what was going on.

From my point of view, the main problem with "Girl Meets Fish" was that it was basically set up as a typical Auggie B story, spread out over the course of 22 minutes -- not exactly the best template for any Girl Meets World episode. (Just look at Season 1's "Girl Meets World: Of Terror.) Here, the format was playfully contorted into a noir-style whodunnit (or I guess I should say "whoooooo-dunnit!"), which at first felt kind of like an homage to Boy Meets World's "As Time Goes By." Alas, the execution wasn't as clever nor sustainable. At this point, Auggie's cuteness factor can only go so far, and not for extended periods of time. Add to the that the fact that the mystery itself was painfully inconsequential, revolving around the murder of a goldfish (or rather many, many goldfish).
