The long-awaited Gladiator sequel finally has a finished script.

During an interview with Collider, director Ridley Scott revealed that Gladiator 2 was ready to move along: “Oh, it’s been written,” he confirmed. “It’s already been written. We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go. You can't just do another Gladiator type movie. You’ve got to follow… there’s enough components from the first one to pick up the ball and continue it.”

Gladiator 2 was announced back in 2018 after Paramount officially greenlit the project. It’s expected to follow the story of Lucius Verus – the grandson of Marcus Aurelius who was played by Spencer Treat Clark in the original film.

Due to the fate of Maximus Decimus Meridius at the end of Gladiator, Russel Crowe is not expected to return in the upcoming sequel… unless he appears in a series of flashbacks. However, no official casting announcements have been made.

The Gladiator sequel is set to begin production after Ridley Scott’s upcoming Napoleon biopic, Kitbag, which will see Gladiator star Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.

The finished Gladiator 2 script was penned by Peter Craig who also co-wrote the final two Hunger Games films as well as the upcoming Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Gladiator was released back in 2000 and went on to win five Academy Awards. The movie follows the story of General Maximus Decimus Meridius – a betrayed Roman general who finds himself captured by slavers and thrown in the gladiatorial games after the murder of his wife and son.

It earned over $460 million at the worldwide box office and currently has a 77% rating at Rotten Tomatoes as well as making it onto our list of the 10 best Ridley Scott movies.

Gladiator starred Russel Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius alongside Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus, as well as Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Richard Harris, and David Hemmings.
