Gotham: "The Anvil or the Hammer" Review

Gotham prepared for the end of its first season by once again turning Barbara into victim and once again having someone trick Falcone and Maroni into going to war. Yes, familiar stories and arcs that we've already burned through are now being dragged back out for Season 1's endgame.

Last week, I was excited to see the formation of what looked like a perverse partnership between Barbara and the Ogre. We'll never know whether or not they actually sexually explored the ins and outs of the Ogre's Christian Grey-zone, but the fact that the sight of all the bondage gear didn't scare Barbara off made for an interesting beat. But that was all a ruse. As it turns out, there was no point in having her be interested in him last week. They basically just drew out the "Barbara's been kidnapped" angle over two episodes by having the Ogre first decide not to kill her and then, later on, decide to nab her and threaten to kill her. Sloppy storytelling that smacks of a series having to stretch its story out over 22 episodes when 13 would have done just fine.
