Note: this is an advance review of Groot #1, which will be released Wednesday, June 3.

Of all the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot seems like the least likely candidate for an ongoing solo series. After all, he's a tree of remarkably few words. A Groot comic poses a real uphill battle in terms of getting into the character's head and using him in a way you won't see in an ensemble Guardians book. Unfortunately, this issue does little new or interesting with Groot. It's entertaining, certainly, but not clever or unique enough to stand out amid the many dozens of other new books Marvel is launching this summer.

Groot #1 barely reads like a new comic anyway. This new series is replacing Skottie Young's Rocket Racoon comic, and it could just as easily be the same book with a new creative team. Rocket himself is very much a key player in this issue. He pretty much has to be, as Rocket is the only one capable of serving as Groot's translator. There's no attempt to give Groot subtitles or some sort of running narration here. Granted, that might have been too weird or off-kilter, but at least it would have been something different. As it stands, Groot comes across as a secondary player in his own comic. He simply meanders from point A to B to C while Rocket provides 90% of the dialogue and exposition.
