When Guardians of the Galaxy came out, it defied audiences' expectations of what a Marvel movie could be, becoming the studio's best-grossing debut film for its superhero franchises. Now director James Gunn and Marvel Studios are faced with the challenge of doing the same thing over again, and both are convinced they're delivering a finished product that is going to exceed already high expectations.
"I don't think it's going to be what anyone expects," Gunn admitted to IGN and a small group of reporters during a trip to Vol. 2's Atlanta set last April. If this new film retreads any familiar material, it's going to be in Gunn's attempt to surprise audiences by doing something different, this time with an even deeper story and exploration of the core characters.
