Gunpowder?!

I've got a retired military friend, trying to get him off the analogs..

Since day one, he's requested a whisky/bacon/gunpowder combo juice. It's something comforting to him, that combination.. The first two items, aren't the issue.. It's the gunpowder..

Gunpowder can be used as a seasoning, it's still common practice, but I don't see it as safe to create an extract from. It's mainly salt petre, which is salty.. But most people say gun powder tastes peppery and metallic.

Please help. Anyone? Is there a flavoring out there to simulate this metallic peppery flavor??

TIA!!

FA has a Black Pepper flavoring. Taste is spot on. I find it pretty strong at 0.5%. I've used a toothpick to swirl a touch of flavoring in a mix. Pretty good, actually. FA also has a Black Fire flavoring. Simulates the smokiness of a cigarette at 0.5%, if you go higher, it'll taste like smoked..... hickory? Something like that.

Awesome! I'll look into those. I figured fa black pepper would be good, cause, fa is awesome. That dang metallic flavor is what I'm just not seeing.

Yeah, I can't help you with "metallic". That'll be tricky. Good luck, though! I hope your mix will be equally comforting to him.

Since we know that we won't be able to find a FA Metallic concentrate, there might be a way to create a "metallic" like taste. I remember reading about a chestnut concentrate being used to create flavor for a butter. Because too much flavor was used it had a metallic taste. Hope that helps.

I saw a response on natures flavors acorn having a metallic taste if too much was used.. I just assumed it was a fluke. So, you might be on to something!! Yay!! This is why I love this group.

Side note... I have to taste this to get it mixed just right... Guhhhhhh lol that's gonna be FUN.

Lock, Stock and Barrel?

I know you're not asking for the whiskey part, but TFA Kentucky Bourbon and TFA Red Oak make a great true whiskey flavor.

While I don't know much about DIY except the theory behind it, I wonder if you take a clean copper penny and stick it in a bottle or jar with the liquid and let it steep for a few days to get that metallic flavor he desires?

I use wizard labs' vg based nic, and have never had a single complaint of it being peppery. Thank you for the thought though :)

Unfortunately, that introduces a while hoard of chemicals and metal compounds that aren't going to be safe to vape, which is why I haven't just created my own gunpowder extract with pg..

If I vape it side by side with VT nic I can taste the difference. But i mixed up several bottles for vacation and some were with VT and Some were Wizards, and I never noticed it, because I forgot which bottles were which and were all the same flavor.

But thought it might be worth a shot as a suggestion

Have you tried brass (I think)? Its sometimes used for tapped beer and can cause a metallic taste. I think its when they touch the brass to the glass its leaves the metallic flavor it isn't good for beer but maybe for vape.

Could brandy be considered a metallic taste if used in a mix it didn't really belong?
