Raise your glass and dry your perpetually bandaged eyes, Hawkeye fans—Matt Fraction and David Aja’s acclaimed run has come to a close. Their much delayed finale is here at last, and in typical Hawkguy fashion it proves well worth the wait. Whether you were a Hawkeye fan long before he traded in purple boots and loincloths for tinted shades and arrow tees, or whether you came in drawn to the misadventures of the least powerful member of the world’s most powerful team, either way, this finale hits the mark. It’s a defining close for an equally seminal run, and its one no Hawkeye fan should miss.
Even with the long delay between issues, issue #22 is gripping at the onset. The finale revolves around the last moments of the battle of Bed-Stuy, Fraction’s upping of the ante making for an issue light on words and high on punching. That’s not to say the issue is senseless in its action—Fraction ensures that Clint’s final showdown with The Clown and the Tracksuit Draculas is one loaded with meaning, spoken or otherwise. To go into detail would spoil some truly affecting surprises, but it’s safe to say that every character, human, canine or otherwise, is given their time to shine.
