I believe that this is the correct sub-forum, but I just bought a HCigar Kayfun 3.1 and I am having a lot of trouble doing a good build on it. I've tried cotton, ekowool, cellucotton(Rayon), and nothing I try ends well. It is all tasting burnt. Has anyone made a video, knows of a good one, or is willing to make one for me(and the community of course)?

Thanks

I am experienced but would not call myself an expert, i like Kayfuns by infinite but dont think HCigar would be an issue since it is a popular brand. Are you using A1 Kanthal? Are you soaking the wick with juice before you fire the coil? Could the taste you are getting be from the juice? Beyond these 3 area's i'm not sure what else could contribute to you issue.

Could be a wicking issue but more importantly, what is the ohm of the coil you built? When you dry fire it without the wick does it glow evenly from the center out? How thick is the e-liquid?

Also, Rip Trippers does a lot of videos on coil building, he's got a couple for the kayfun

Agree here.. need to know your build - how many wraps - what type of wire etc.

heres my ritual:
wrap the coil on drill bit - attach to posts - check the ohms with mod and pulse to make sure the whole thing glows - slide the cotton through (not a lot, less is better since it expands when wet) - trim cotton ends and drip some juice on the cotton/wire then stick the cotton on the sides without blocking the juice channels - attach the chimney cap - attach to mod again to make sure it still fires - attach bottom to base and fill the KF.. Vapes like a dream every time.

There are a ton of videos but I find its always tough to see close enough to what they are doing - I just used trial and error. Good luck!

Yes I am using the a1 kanthal 28 Guage to be exact, I did wet the wick, but I am not sure about the juice it tastes fine in my other rba's and rda's. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe my juice is too thick, 50/50 ratio.

It was a 1 ohm coil and it did glow evenly. Juice is 50/50 so maybe a little thick for the small juice wells..

That's what I have done too but it seems that something is a miss in my build and I haven't quite narrowed it down yet. I am now thinking that maybe the juice is just a little too thick. But now that I think about it, I was manually pulling juice up into the chimney by covering the air intake and sucking on it but it still wasn't vaping very well.

Yea thats weird.. I only use cotton and I've never had a burnt taste.. I normally use 70vg blends .. I would assume its gotta be due to under/over wicking? Can't think of anything else..

And you have played around with the airflow too? (if your KF has that)

I have tried wrapping on medium screwdriver verticle and horizontal all with orgie cotton but I like 28 gauge 6-7 wraps on a blunt tip syringe best or 30 gauge double barrel on blunt tip all with cotton best, like tripper rip video best.happy vaping. .8 - 1 OHM.

I don't think its the thickness of the juice. I use about 80/20 VG/pg and cotton as well. The only other question I have is what kind of device. Maybe too many volts powering the coil. Its has to be the wick. When I first got my kayfun it took me a few builds with different amounts of cotton before I found what I liked. I use 28 gauge wire at 1.8 ohms and more cotton than most I assume. Right now It's on my seven 22 at 15 watts.....Don't get discouraged, building coils and wicking take practice and patience.

Yes I have played around with the airflow and that helps some but the problem is still there(slightly).

Yeah it really does, I made another one exactly like the one in Rip Trippers video and it seems to work better but it is not wicking like it should a few dry hits and very mute flavor. I also tried to fill from the bottom fill hole and now its leaking profusely.. If anyone has any ideas on how to stop it from leaking that would be great.

Thanks

Make sure everything is tight and your AFC is not to tight
I did that and cleaned it but it seems that whatever was keeping that valve closed is now gone or pushed back, or something like that...
Has anybody else had a problem like that??

hello again Tyler - in regards to the leaking from the filler port, if there is an o-ring make sure the next time it is seated correctly, myself i have a side filler port for a needle bottle instead of bottom port but i never use it. i put my finger of the air flow port and fill it from the top. once in a while i will have to put a napkin over the air hole blow through the mouth piece and then move the napkin if i need to clear any leakage. In regards to the first issue, does the burnt taste come after a few minutes or is it all of the time. my thought is that i take much longer draws than my wife so the smallest juice channels would be fine for her but not for me (my dyi juice is 70 to 75 vg depending on mix). though i never had a kayfun with the problem you have, i did have a kayfun that the airflow hole was so small it would whistle every time i vaped and just found it to annoying to use, it may of had this problem if i would have used it

Tyler, I have heard of some of the Hcigar versions not having the juice channels milled out all the way. They don't necessarily have to touch but the bottom ones need to be kinda close so the juice can get in the chimney. Also the only time I get a burnt taste is if I use too much cotton.

If you have a B&M store close by I would take it in. Sometimes they have employees that are good at building coils. Most of them sell kayfun clones . I'm sure they can look it and maybe diagnose any defects.

IMHO with all of the great suggestions offered and you are still having the problem, what I would do is to put back in the box for now (tackle it again when you have more highway behind you) and buy one that is made by infinite, it is advertized as "very high quality" and i will attest to that, I have 4 of them and not an issue with any. The first one I bought from fasttech (yes, I somehow bought something from fasttech that was not junk) but for several reasons I don't deal with them no longer. The only usa vendor I have found is on ebay, there may be others, I just do not know them

RE the fill port. It's a check ball and a spring and seal. If you used a metal tip needle filler you may have damaged it. The ball is not stainless. With my Hcigar 3.1 the only way I fixed mine was to repeatedly ( took the better part of 30 mins on mine) flush hot water through the valve, pulsing it with short squeezes from both ends i.e. the fill port and also from the deck hole. I eventually got the ball to reseat.

Ill take a look at the oring and see what I can find.

Hmm. I don't suppose you would know a good way to increase the size of the channels?

Very good advice, Ill try that later when I get a chance.

Tyler, Make sure that your wick is not blocking the supply grooves on the atomizer base - or that tiny particles haven't become stuck in there. The wick should be "S" shaped & lay over/across the grooves, but not in them. Also, your coil should sit diagonally, not straight across the center air duct and be raised up a tad above it so you get good air flow.

The fill port (is a pain) - Mine does the same thing if I don't turn the atty upside down (drip tip pointing to the floor) to fill. And you have to leave air space for the pressure to equalize inside the tank. If it still leaks - blow throw the fill port HARD & flush like Lefty said. Blow & flush.

I haven't had my Kayfun very long, but the first bit was a royal pain in the arse - so I know how you feel. I was ready to chunk it & be done. But, once it's right & working well, it's awesome. Good luck.

Your e-liquid is not to thick at 50/50. I have both my 3.1 and my Plus V2 with 70pg/30vg e-liquid and I have no issues with burnt taste. If you take your 3.1 apart and post pictures on here maybe collaboratively we can spot the problem you are facing. Happy Vaping.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys/gals, I think I might have to take it to the shop I bought it from Ecig Crib here in Minnesota. Maybe they will offer an exchange for a new one otherwise I think I'll try and get the ss ball to fill the airhole and replace that crappy plastic one that comes with it.
