Help me with claptons/fused claptons?

So I got some 316l SS wire in from the slow boat today. What I got is 28g and 26g. I meant to order something thinner for claptons, but this is what I have along with 24g kanthal. I'm not worried about mixing resistance because I'm vaping on a Hohm Wrecker and I can dial in whatever I build.

Anyway, with the wire I have, is it possible to make some claptons? If so, what do you recommend? I'd like something around .2-.5 ohms if possible. The claptons can go in my Kylin or Goon v1.5 clone if that helps. I don't care if it is single or dual core, but this will be my first attempt at making claptons and for some stupid reason I only bought 9 feet of the 26g and 30 feet of 28g. I assume I'll use the 24g kanthal for the core(s), and 28g wrap, but I don't know.

I have a cordless drill and a vice. I need to figure out how to get the vice end spinning because I can't find any fishing swivels. I'm pretty inventive, but I'm listening if you guys use something other than swivels.

Thanks. I hope this isn't too broad a question.

I've never tried to clapton with 28g wraps, sounds like a major pita. I would get a spool of 32 or 34. I don't use swivels, if you straighten the cores good, you shouldn't need them.

28g is really too big to wrap with from what I've been reading. You can use the 24 or 26 for core wire, but the real experts claim at least 10 gauges difference between core and wrap meaning if you use 24 for the core, you need at least 34 for the wrap. The Hohmwrecker will handle it as long as you don't overtax your batteries, but you'll have to crank on it or the ramp up will take forever and the vape will be hot as hell.

That's been my experience at least, but what I know? I'm sure there are a lot of things I'm doing wrong.

I've noticed most of the really good builders use 26 or 28 for cores and 36 to 40 for the wrap.

Regarding swivels, here you go...according to whiteowl84 and this is a quote from another thread:

The best swivels are these:

The 330lb ones last a very long time, you won't need more than 2 for several months and you won't need smaller ones till you start making tiny intricate things like 4ply paraclap and micro clapton.

I'm no pro, but I think that using higher gauge wire is preferred because a lower gauge wire will act as a heat sink and result in more mass thus requiring more power to heat the coils. I like 36 gauge wire anything higher is extremly thin and more difficult to work with. If you are starting out I wouldn't recommend anything higher than 34 gauge, but I frustrate easily.

Yep. 34g or higher. The higher the better, really, but 34 is ok.

You can do a twisted 28. Just stick 2 strands in the drill chuck and hold the other ends with pliers. Twist it for 5-6 seconds at high speed. Wrap some coils and see how it vapes. Personally, I never got a good vape from twisted coils. It was always spitty and kinda slow to ramp.

And like mark said, if you're only making single core claptons, swivels aren't necessary. Some folks can even make aliens freehand, but I'm not one of them lol.

And there's really no substitute for good ball-bearing swivels. Walmart usually has some. Just make sure they are ball-bearing. Those el cheapo barrel swivels will make you throw shit lol.

Even if I'm spinning a fused I don't use swivels. I really like 24x2/34 ss316l. If I run out of 34, the local shop only carries up to 32, so if I'm in a pinch.

Well I'm definitely going to follow your advice and grab some thin wire. My roommates drill caught fire yesterday, so I hand wrapped what I have. Pita so I only made enough for one spaced 3.5mm coil, 7 wraps I think. Not sure what I'll stick it in. Probably the Kylin.

Totally different question, but I'm wondering what parallel coils are. I took some ss and wrapped two lengths side by side. Is that what it is? It's fairly large so I don't think it'll fit the goon and definitely won't fit my big baby beast rba section. Kylin to the rescue.

Oh, if you don't use swivels won't the wire just break in the vice, or are you doing it with a drill and nothing to secure the other end?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions... Have any of you used the clothes pin method to wrap claptons? I was wondering if it's really as easy as they say. Which side of the pin do you feed the wrap wire on? The drill side, or the swivel side?

Nothing on the other end.

Never used a clothespin.

I just straighten the 2 cores, set them in the chuck as close to parallel as I can in the 3 clamp chuck. Once I get through the first bit, it tightens up good and you can go quick. I mean it's not like I'm ripping out several feet at a time. If I was doing a crap ton, I would probably get swivels.
