Sony Pictures' Hotel Transylvania 2 dominated this weekend's domestic box office, setting a new record high for September.
The film earned a whopping $47.5 million, eclipsing its predecessor, which released to $42.5 million back in 2012. Thanks to its soaring success, a third film is almost certain, with Sony Pictures boss Rory Bruer teasing: "There are a lot of stories left to tell."
Meanwhile, The Intern debuted in a distant second, raking in $18.2 million. Last week's leader, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials placed third with $14 million, followed thereafter by Everest and Black Mass, which earned $13.1 million and $11.5 million, respectively.
