It's recently been confirmed that the cost of Amazon Prime would be increasing from $119 to $139 yearly, or from $12.99 to $14.99 monthly. This is the first price hike in around four years for Amazon, with changes going into effect from February 18 for new subscribers.

A lot of us probably don't want to pay any more than we currently are for Prime. Thankfully, there are already a few workarounds to check out. To give you a headstart, here's our top four ways on how to avoid the Amazon Prime price hike of 2022.

1. Sign Up to Amazon Prime Before February 18

Let's kick things off with an easy one. If you don't currently have an Amazon Prime account, but you do want Prime this year, make sure you sign up before the cut off date.

On February 18, 2022, all-new Amazon Prime users will have to pay $14.99/month or $139/year. Sign up before then for a 30-day free trial, and then a yearly membership, and you'll only have to pay $119, the going rate for the past four years. (This also works the same for those who pay monthly. Switch things up, and pay for a year of Prime now to save almost $60 over the course of the year.)

2. Gift Yourself 1-Year of Amazon Prime Right Now

Existing members will start to pay the new prices for Amazon Prime from March 25, 2022. If you are one of the millions currently paying for Amazon Prime in the US, there is a small hack you can do to pay just $119, instead of $139, for at least one more year.

This trick involves gifting yourself one year of Prime for $119 right now while the price is still locked in, and then cancelling your Prime membership before your auto-renewal date. Once your membership has fully expired, simply activate the gifted Prime membership and you're done, another year of Amazon Prime for $119. I've broken these steps down below as well, just to keep things as simple as possible.

  1. Gift Yourself a Prime Membership for $119 now (see here)
  2. Set a reminder to cancel your Prime membership
  3. Manually cancel your membership a day before it expires (preventing auto-renewal)
  4. Important: Wait for your membership to end
  5. Redeem your "gifted" Prime membership

3. Join Amazon Prime Student

If you're a student, or maybe you've got a generous student living with you who will gracefully share their account, you can save even more on Amazon Prime, with Amazon Prime Student. (Requires .edu email address).

Costing just $59 per year, Prime Student comes with all the benefits of a Prime membership (free two-day shipping, Prime Video, etc), and even throws in a few extra incentives as well. New members can sign up for a 6-month free trial. and will only have to pay $6.49/month, or $59/year after the trial expires.

4. Cancel Amazon Prime Altogether

Rogue choice, I know. Do you need Amazon Prime? If yes, see my three suggestions above. If no, just cancel it altogether and save $119/$139 a year. Sorted.
